Would the police need a search warrant to look in my backpack in high school

Question

I'm ot planning on having anyting illegal in there just some headache pills. I want to have them handy because I like to take them when I need them and not have to wait in line at the clinic with my headache and sometimes the nurse isn't in there. What are the laws about this in Manatee county,FL.

Schools are crazy now days, I doubt your allowed to have anything unless maybe if your parents sign some kind of waiver and get it approved to have advil or some other medication. My school would let you if you got it approved which wasn't a huge process. As for a search warrant students in a schools rights are often pushed to the side a little for the sake of safety of large numbers of kids so I imagine search and seizure rules are a bit easier

Usually not, unless it is part of a routine at the school.  The Supreme Court has ruled on similar cases in the past and seem to grant some leeway to police and administration officials to keep their schools safe.

If everyone is being searched, then it is usually legal for a police officer to search your bag.  If you are the only one being searched, the officer would need probable cause.

I think schools have authority to do such searches, if they feel there is a reason.  School does NOT guarantee privacy, and do not need warrants.

Re headache pills.. it used to be no big deal, but many schools PROHIBIT any kind of pills at all.  One reason is that kids have the tendency to share "meds" and some meds, even over the counter, can be harmful, without you knowing it.  Whether you agree with the reasoning or not.. it still is a rule, and breaking it can get you in deep waters.
