Would there be a way for me to know the location of the person who emailed me?

I have been receiving emails and snail mails from an anonymous sender. I have the feeling that its from my X gf but its not safe to assume. I would like to track down where this person is so I can file a formal complain to the police.

I heard you can track their location thru the IP address used. But how can I get that?

Many thanks!

  1. No, there is no way to get a physical location of the sender of email.  If there were, folks like the FBI and Securities and Exchange Commission would love it!  Actually, the SMTP standard is very, very loose.  It doesn't even require traceable sender information in the message header.  That's why SPAM gets away with spoofed content in the "FROM" field.

If you suspect it's your ex, contact her directly and ask.  Otherwise, just tag it as SPAM in your mail filter.  If the snail mail letters are abusive or nasty (harrassment), report them to your Post Master.

  2. IP address should be in the header somewhere. Not likely to be of much use though. Once you have it you can try to use an IP tracer but all it's likely to tell you is the ISP.

  3. You cant track ips from emails only the company of the email.

And they wont release that information to anyone. You would have to have a warrant and be some kinda high up authority like the FBI

  4. it is possible.

I think you should use Google to find the program that uses IP Adresses for location tracking that are free.

From there, type in the IP Adress you see and let a rip.

Google-> Ip tracking... or IP Location. .. or Track IP.

    You get the idea.
