Would just a handful of people have them or would they have been invented at all without modern transportation?

  1. Especially space travel. There orbits are quite complicated.

  2. Computers - mechanical ones anyway - predated motorized transport by hundreds of years.

The question then is, would they be as powerful and as cheap as they are now - and thus, as available? Fast transportation speeds up development cycles since it allows efficient collaborative work over wide distances, so the answer would probably be no.
