Would they put me a year behind?

I was born in america, but am currently living in England since the last 6 years. I'm 14, and going into year 10 over here but if I lived in the US right now, I would be in 9th grade. I wanted to know whether if I moved back there, they would put me in 10th grade because I am in 10th grade over here. Or whether according to my age, put me a year behind? Would I be put in the same grade I am in England, for example the 10th grade? Would I have to take some sort of exam so the school I may enroll in, in USA are guaranteed that I am capable of being a year ahead in terms of my age?

Thanks.

  1. You would most likely have to be tested to see what you actually know. Then the school would place you where you would best fit. Some classes may not transfer at all, as they might not have equivalent classes in different countries. Be prepared to lose some when you transfer, but it all works out in the end.

  2. i think it depends what state you move to. my cousin is originally from jamaica. we're the same age. over there she was 2 grades ahead of me but when she came to new jersey they pushed her back because of her age. but my other cousin who is also from jamaica and the same age as me moved to florida. they made her take a placement test and they kept her in her same grade. so i believe it really depends on the school district you're trying to get into.
