Low protein dog food

Hamster/Gerbil food

dried bananas

oats

unsalted sunflower seeds

uncooked pasta

cherrios

rolled barley

peanuts (a FEW)

dried cranberries

puffed wheat

puffed rice

Would that be could and healthy? I'm THINKING about getting Regal Rat but I'm not sure cause its expensive but I don't really need advice on that...just the mix.

  1. Absolutely not. Hamster/gerbil food should not be fed to rats. Take out the peanuts and cherrios and add Total cereal (the Total cereal is essential for it's vitamins and minerals) and you have, essentially, Suebee's mix. Which is only complete providing you also feed a lot of variety and fresh food.

Edit: Have you considered feeding Suebee's mix with Harlan Teklad lab blocks as the staple rather than dog food?

    Suebee's: http://www.petinfopackets.com/rats/ratfe...

Just exclude the dog food staple and instead supply Harlan Teklad lab blocks as the staple in the mix. 2014 formula is best for adult rats. Since Harlan Teklad lab blocks are complete you can also exclude the Total cereal from the mix.

  2. Lol no! Go to the pet store and get GERBIL food with things that are special for gerbils. If you can find pellets that would be better because they can choke on the seeds and die. Pellets are wayyyyy better!!!!

    Hope this helped=) Good luck!

  3. Nix the mix and go with the Regal Rat. Nuts and fruit would make a nice occasional treat.

  4. yes, just don't give him too much.

  5. Just think in terms of a complete human diet.  Humans don't need to eat a prepackaged "Human Pellet Food" diet to have proper nutrition; they just are supposed to eat a varied diet, consisting of many different foods, to ensure they get a variety of different nutrients.  That should be fine.

  6. A laboratory rodent feed will be the staple food.

You can supplement with a tiny bit of nuts and seeds, fresh fruits and leafy greens, cooked meat and bones.

    And as treats, cereal.

Dog food is not for rats.

  7. I reccomend either Regal Rat or lab blocks. Most pet stores sell them in either 2lb or 5 lb bags. You can order bulk online if you want. But Regal Rat is good because it's specially formulated for rats over 4 months.
