Question:

Would this be a good diet for rats?

I just asked a question like this but I changed the recipe a bit:

Low protein dog food

A little bit of rat food mix from the store (maybe...1lb)

dried bananas

oats

unsalted sunflower seeds

uncooked pasta

cherrios (other cereals like total or vital 100)

rolled barley

peanuts (not with every mix I make, every 3rd one maybe...just for a treat/change)

dried cranberries

puffed wheat

puffed rice

dried Bananas (a few)

Is this good or do I still need to change it. Please dont recomend Regal Rat because I know about that and I might be ordering it. I tried Harlan and they dont like them and neither do I because I think it has too much corn in it and it supports the use of Lab Rats which I dont like. What do you think of the mix?

  1. no not 2 me

  2. i think you should throw some sprite and doors in there and itll be perfect  also you said dreid bananas twice

  3. yeh that should be fine for the little fella.

  4. Needs tweaking. Rat food mix from the store is c**p, don't use it, forget the cherrios and just use Total, forget the peanuts they are not good for rats.

You're basically feeding Suebee's mix then. Which is fine, just make sure you provide plenty of fresh foods. You should be providing fresh foods /anyway/. Daily veggies and occasional fruits.

What kind of low protein dog food are you going to use? I'd recommend Natural Balance Reduced Calorie Formula or Wellness Super5Mix Healthy Weight Dog Food.

  5. Where's the poison on that list?

  6. I've had approx 12 rats in my life time.  Sounds good, rat's like fruit too but nothing with citrus.  My rats lived a long time, i hardly fed them rat food.  Their favorites were chicken bones with a little chicken on them, they LOVED corn on the cob, flavored yogurt and different types of healthy cereal like cheerios or raisen bran and nuts, pieces of hard boiled eggs. My daughter tried to give him peanut butter it almost suffocated him, i got it out of his mouth but he was having a hard time so don't do that.  I also gave him an occassional little piece of oatmeal cookie, he liked that too. Basically we gave them what ever healthy dinner or breakfast we were having. They were never overweight, lived long and healthy no tumors! Make sure u change the cage once a week.  I also bathed mine every couple weeks in bath sink or tub with leg deep warm water and baby shampoo, keep out of their ears and dry them thoroughly. Also you should try to buy a rat from a breeder not a pet store, they mass breed and they usually come with respitory infections (wheezing) this is usually fatal. I had it happend twice, large vet bill!

  7. Nice answers people..ugh. The diet you're thinking of is almost exactly the recipe for Sue Bee's rat diet (link below), which I feed my 11 ratties, and it's awesome! I don't use any store brand rat food though, just all the other ingredients, and I just use my dog's food, Natural Choice Lamb and Rice; I'm probably going to be switching to the senior formula soon, though, It's better I guess. Oh and use a little bit of Total, not Cheerios, it's got tons of vitamins, it's great.

  8. sounds better than garbage
