my aunt and uncle are coming to maine from arizona for my graduation june 7th. im moving in with them in chandler arizona. we leave to go to phoenix june 16th. the flight leaves portland maine at 530pm [eastern] plus it takes 30 minutes before take off. we connect through newark or new york airport [i couldn't tell what my mom said but it's one of the two]. i have no clue how long the delay is or whatever it's called when you wait for your connecting flight to arrive but i'm assuming it can't be too long. from there it would take around 4 hours to get to phoenix. so would this be a red eye flight at all? [i know it won't at the begining but would it in the middle or end?]

  1. I am not totally sure what you are asking....A red-eye flight is any flight that leaves late at night and arrives early the next morning. Typically anytime between 9pm and 7am. The term red-eye is obviously named that because it is tiring.

So if the Newark-Arizona leg is leaves later then 9pm and most likely it does depending on your layover..then sure you can call it a "Red-Eye Flight" if you want...

  2. No because you are flying east to west. For example, if I fly NY to LA, leaving at 6pm, I'd get to LA at 9pm local time, on account of the 3 hr time difference, and still go to bed that night normally (eyes not red).  They don't schedule east to west flights departing after 10pm because most westcoast airport services will be closed for the late arrival.

When your aunt and uncle fly west to east, they can get on a 10 or 11pm flight, and arrive 6am east coast time. That would be mean sleeping overnight on the plane, which is a red eye.

  3. Usually, red eye means a flight around midnight. So, your flight from Maine is not a red eye. Your flight from New York might be a red eye, if it leaves around midnight.

  4. Redeye is a flight after midnight
