Question:

Would this be an advertising or marketing major? Or something else?

I just graduated from high school and will be attending a large university next year.

I want to create advertisements on computers. I'm really good at determining layouts and creating attractive and eye-catching ads using words and graphics. I'm also good at targeting certain audiences based on my designs, which I know is marketing.

What major does this fall under? Advertising? Graphic arts? Right now I plan to major in marketing.

Also, does anyone do this for a living? What is your job title?

  1. Major in Graphic Arts.  Take some marketing and advertising courses along the way.  An advertising or marketing major will not help you much.  What you are doing is graphic arts.  In marketing you'll be keeping budgets, doing store-checks and other chores much different from what you say you enjoy.

  2. What you have described as what you take the greatest joy in is considered Graphic Arts - Design and/or Art Direction

Depending on where you go to school, Design and Art Direction would be considered Art courses, not Advertising or Marketing courses.

Marketing is a field that includes a number of disciplines: Sales, Public Relations, Advertising, Event Planning, and Promotion, just to name a few. The field of Advertising definitely has a need for people with a background in design. At the same time, however, you will be more marketable as a designer if you also have a general understanding of basic Marketing concepts. A designer who understands target marketing, psychographic information, demographics and other marketing principles may have a leg up on a designer who does not.

As you look into Marketing as a minor, I would strongly advise you to consider some courses in Internet Marketing. The Internet has dramatically altered the way products and services are marketed, and has probably had the biggest influence on advertising since the advent of cable television. The more you comprehend how the Internet is used as a marketing tool and a design medium, the better your chances of future employment. I'm not trying to talk you out of following your heart into career of art direction, but traditional advertising is somewhat on the wane.

Oh, to answer the last part of your question, I am a Marketing Director for a national retail chain and have 15-plus years of ad agency experience as a writer and creative director.

  3. Do a double major with Graphic Design and Marketing together.   it is the best combination for what you want to do.
