Question:

Would this be stupid to do?

I'm a very shy, quiet person - especially at work. There are a few coworkers, though, who have been good friends to me and have helped me come out of my shell a little bit. They're always there to listen or give advice and ask for nothing in return. I've had bad luck when it comes to friends, especially with them taking advantage of my good nature. Even tho I'm still shy around my coworkers, it has meant a lot to me that they're always so willing to listen or offer advice without asking for anything in return.

Would it be stupid to write them a thank u card telling them this? If you got a card from me, what would u think if u were them?

  1. Yes I think it is a bit desperate and needy (OTT).

  2. Thats very considerate and thoughtfull.

  3. Its cute and nice. Go for it. They will know that you are caring and that you appericate what they have done for you. =)

  4. if thats how you express your gratitude. go for it.

it's a tad cheesy to me though. i would invite them out to a bar/resteraunt and open up and relax with them. i was an introvert too but i had to change. i had to get out there and open up and not be affraid to just 'hang out" and talk and socialize. it could be cooler than what you think.

  5. No, frankly, I think that would be too much, especially if you see them every day.

  6. It wouldn't be "stupid" but it would be uncomfortable for them.

Just say  thanks in person when somebody helps you out. That's what friends do. No formal thanks are required or expected. I'm sure that when you have the opportunity to give help or advice in an area in which you have expertise you will do the same for them. It's called teamwork.

  7. I think that would show that your a considerate, and caring person, but it does come off a bit cheesy. I'd invite them for a few drinks at a local bar, or maybe to a local diner for some cheap food.

  8. I think it sounds very nice.  People like to be appreciated.  As long as they are not fake or cynical people, I think they would like it.

  9. Wait until there is an occasion, then include your sentiments in a card with or without small gift. Christmas and New Years are good occasions for that sort of thing. Or if you can't wait that long, then Thanksgiving if you're American. Maybe a birthday? I'd suggest you wait for a suitable occasion so that you can do it smooth, not awkward.

  10. Writing a thank you for them being nice to you is not a good idea.  Showing them in small ways around work is a good idea.  Bring in dougnuts and a box of joe from Dunkin Donuts if there is an occasion.  In general just be nice to your co-workers and try to get along and fit in.  People do not take advantage of you unless you allow them to.  Remember that and try to move yourself away from being taken advantage of.  Saying no is an important part of being an adult.  People do not like you better because you are a doormat.  So start standing up for yourself and you will find more friends.  People always like those who are self assured, not a whimp.

  11. Next time an opportunity comes up say "I'm really glad we're friends."

I don't think it would be stupid to send a card but you'd have to make sure it doesn't sound pathetic.

  12. I think that is very sweet...I would suggest writing a quick email saying thank you for listening it means a lot to me.

  13. I don't think it would be "stupid" - but they may perceive it as "over the top."  If I got such a card - just out of the blue - from one of my co-workers - I'd wonder why they thought it was necessary to thank me in such a way - but I'd still think it was a sweet gesture.

They probably don't think that being a friend requires a thank you.  Maybe you'd just like to wait until their birthday(s) - and write it in the card at that point.  You also could just say at the end of any given conversation - "Uh - Joe - I'd just like to know that I really appreciate your friendship.  Thank you for listening and being so kind."
