I am trying to make sure that I understand this - here is what I think the answer is.

Answer - {x:| 4 - 1| > 3} and {x:| -2 - 1| > -3}

  1. I always thought, and remember it this way that the l...l means it is always 1 or -1

    so... make sure you know the difference between l...l and (...)

    the first equation would be wrong anyways.  b/c -3 is not greater that 3

    it would have to be greater or EQUAL to.

    you want a higher number I am thinking... like 5-1>3 b/c 4 is greater that 3

    I dunno anymore... college algebra is different from this

  2. x: | x - 1 | >= 3

    x - 1 >= 3 .........................x >=4

    or x - 1 <= -3 .....................x <= -2

    \Answer - {x: x >= 4 or x <= -2}
