Would this disqualify me for the Navy?

I was diagnosed with depression about 10 years ago when I was 15. Never been on meds for it and it's not an issue any more. Will this disqualify me for joining the Navy (or any other branch of the service for that matter)?

  1. I doubt it. Ask a recruiter.

  2. Should not be because of the no medication for ir and the length of time.  Really depends on the recruiter and MEPS in the bottom line.

  3. It also sounds like it;s ancient history!    Good luck in the Navy!

  4. I doubt it. My ex girlfriend joined the Navy and she was diagnoses with severe clinical depression and was taking meds for it. Based on what you said about your situation, the depression doesn't seem to be much of an issue in your life anymore and I highly doubt it would get in the way of your expected duties in the Navy.

  5. It will only be disqualifying if you were admitted to a mental health facility and/or spent six months in therapy with a mental health professional. The medical standard is below.

However, you should mention it on item #10 of your Report of Medical History form when you go for your physical at MEPS. They will just note the history and mark it "n.s.", a Latin abbreviation  which means there were no complications or lasting effects.

  6. Since you were never placed on medication for depression it should not disqualify you; however, you may need to go back to the doctor who diagnosed you and have them reverse the diagnosis (easy to do since you never took meds).

  7. No.  I would be honest with them if they ask, but it shouldn't disqualify you.
