Would this kind of theft be covered under a basic renter's insurance policy?

I was away on vacation and left the keys to my apartment with my sister. She decided to invite a couple friends over and they invited a couple friends as well. After they were inside, a man revealed a gun and began to rob my apartment. How would this be looked at? The police considered it a burgarly in the report, but I'm just trying to get the first step as I'm not an expert on insurance.

I had about 6,000 worth of electronics taken from my apartment. I want to have the heads up what to expect. Any input would be appreciated. Thanks in advance.

  1. It's not a burglary, it's a robbery.  Robbery is when people are there and threatened with bodily harm.  Burglary is when no one is there.

This is a theft.  If you have theft coverage on your policy, YOUR stuff should be covered.  Expect your sister to be heavily, heavily interrogated - if this guy was a buddy of hers, or a buddy of a buddy, the insurance company is going to expect you to prosecute EVERYONE involved.  Even if it includes your sister.

They'll cover it, eventually, but a claim like this is going to be heavily investigated - after all, the thief was known!!

Plus, you're probably looking at getting your policy cancelled or non-renewed.

  2. theft is covered under a policy so long as there is evidence of forced entry or exit.  A police report say there was a gun shows force.  The one that people get caught on is mysterious disappearance.  This when then are just missing.  The jewelry in the house but no one appears to have been in the house that claim is denied often.  Good luck.  Talk with you company and open a claim.

  3. I think the police report is very valuable to you. If if had been you in the house and someone robbed you with a gun I don't think there would be any dispute. Your sister was acting as you (your agent). The only thing I can think of is to check the policy for the definition of burglary. It might have a breaking and entry stipulation. good luck.

  4. really i would call your renters insurance, as some do cover burglery but you stil will have to file a robbery with the police to be coverd under your policy
