Question:

Would this seem okay for a used car?

Ok well I know at first the price seemed wonderful, but as I started to think more and more I thought if something could be tricky about this? I found a '94 Honda Civic in my local newspaper for $1000 with 60,000 miles. It was a 4 door, automatic, power locks and windows, as well as a sunroof. The ad claimed that the car was in working order and everything was fine and that it drove very well. It just seems like something else could definately be wrong with the car. Am I being to cautious, or should I consider following up on the ad?

I am not a big car person, so I would greatly appreciate some suggestions.

Thank you

  1. Maybe they need money now, anyhow test drive the car and have your mechanic or a auto shop check it out for you. If the seller won't let you do that then something is wrong. A friend of mine sold his Honda for 400 and there was nothing wrong with it !!

  2. Try out Driverside. It's still in beta but for each model it has cost of ownership, quality ratings, lists of similar cars, technical specs and links to other sites that will help you out with more data.  Also the pricing data by mileage will help you see how good the deal is.  Also - get a Carfax report on this car!

  3. When you're buying a car from the newspaper, you should always check whether it is being sold by a criminal. Often, criminals are desperate to sell the car, and might even go to a price under $500. If you're sure it's safe, check its condition. Go for a test drive if possible. Check for any serious bumps and scratches. Otherwise, it's worth to buy it.

  4. Seems funny...most people would not sell an allegedly great running Honda with that low miles for that price with the demand being what it is.

If you follow up, do the standard inspection and be sure the seller has a title in hand.

  5. take a ride in the backseat with the dudes girlfriend and if the wheels fall off then dont buy it and slap the *****!

  6. Hmmm, be careful hon.

I agree with alfred up there.

Also check and make sure no major repairs have been done on the car. There could also be some type of bad exterior damage upon the body.

It may be alright, but make sure to ask plenty of questions and test out as much out as you can. If they seem fishy about that, then you should walk away from it.
