Question:

Would this theme idea work for a M:TG deck?

I'm thinking of building a deck based on high power/toughness creatures like oros, the avenger and streetbreaker wurm, using the ravnica guild lands and mercadian lifts to pay the high mana costs, with a good number of artifacts to abuse the infinite mana combo of metalworker and voltaic construct. (possibly including a chorus of the conclave to make infinitely strong creatures?)

I'd include some one-mana guys like goldenglow moth, suntail hawk and lionheart maverick for early-game protection, too. I think the benefit of this deck is it can play any creature quickly, regardless of color, so it's not limited by the usual problems big creatures face.

then again, I could be missing something crucial. what say you all?

  1. Your biggest problem with big power/toughness creatures is two-fold

    1.  High Mana costs

    2.  High Vulnerability to creature removal spells.

The idea has been done with high power creatures with trample, but the concept is to be ideally in green and with the enchantment Wild Pair out on the field.  Opening hands would include Birds of Paradise, Llanowar Elves, Devoted Druid, Boreal Druid, Search for Tomorrow, and Rampant Growth for starters in getting out the high mana that may be needed.  The Ravnica Guld lands don't really excellerate your mana and are highly vulnerable to the blue mage playing something like Boomerang on the "bounce land", as we like to call it, and that would set you back at least 3 turns in mana drops.  Without Wild Pair on the field to get you at least 2 threats to deal with, most creatures are vulnerable, depending on their color, to a single Terror, Oblivion Ring, or even Pacificism (you could pray they put a Utopia Vow on your creature if you're playing green, that at least helps with mana).  Now the last threat you have is board clearing with Wrath of God or Damnation like effects, which takes your army straight to the graveyard.

Now if you want to abuse the infinite mana combo in your deck, you need to be able to do things like Squall LIne, Blaze, Fireball, Hurricane, Molten Disaster (personal favorite due to split second), Disintegrate, Consume Spirit, or any other card that does X damage.

As for early protection, Holy Day, Pollen Lullaby, and Dawn Charm are 3 cards that protect you from massive amounts of creature damage and work better than suntail hawk or goldenglow moth in that those can only block 1 creature and the spells stop all combat damage you could take.

Good Luck with your deck and I hope you enjoy playing MTG as much as I do.
