in shop i want to build a catapuly i want it to be about mabey 4 feet tall i was thinking about using a counter weight but since its so small id think it wouldent work that well... so i thought.... what about springs????? would that work??? instead of a counterweight attack spings to the opposite side pull it back and have the springs contract with much more force sending the object flying

Yes, springs will work better than a counterweight. The trick is to keep the arm light, because both the arm and the projectile have to be accelerated by the spring. A crossbow is the best design, because the string is extremely light so almost all of the spring force goes onto the projectile.
