Currently my sound system is working fine it is a 5.1. So replacing my dvd player with a Playstation 3 all I would do is connect the HDMI cables from playstation 3 to TV to get blue-ray and my speakers working right?

I had the system professionally installed with a upgrade dvd player and want to replace that with a playstation 3. So, I would not have to do anything with the sound cables...right?

It is so confusing.

  1. It depends on how they hooked it up initially.  There are a few different ways of hooking everything up.  If they ran your upconvert dvd player to your receiver using HDMI and then ran from the receiver to the television with another HDMI you will not need to change anything.  But more than likely they ran your video to the television and audio to your receiver separately.  In order to hook up your PS3 you will need two cables.  A HDMI cable to run to the television, and a digital optical cable to run to your surround sound receiver.

  2. HDMI from PS3 to TV and optical cable from PS3 to receiver. Next you have to set optical out by following in sound setting on PS3.
