  1. You need to do a lot of figuring. I tried that 2 yrs ago and it didn't work for me. You start calling a cable company, or utility company or anyplace like that and they put you on hold for 1/2 hour, your minutes really rack up. I myself will check into this in about 8 more months as far as 1 cell phone for everything. Getting out of Verizon and going with T-Mobile my 300 min because about 1,000 minutes. Their favorite 5 plan means that you pick out 5 numbers that you call a lot day or night OR they call you and the min stay the same. So even in 8 more months if I go with more than 300 min, it's possible to get by with just 1 cell phone and no land line. But if a person calls lots of different people, the favorite 5 plan won't work out too well.

  2. It really depends. I have comcast and get fios internet and unlimited long distance through my cable phone line for $41 a month. I really had to take some time to bargain with the sales people to get my rate down but it can be done!

  3. have a look at vonage.com

  4. Yes it is cheaper, because you don't have to pay for long distance calls. But if you have internet through your land-line you may have to look at as well. I recently went through cable internet so I was able to cancel my land-line.

  5. Yes, as long as you stay within your minutes. I have T-Mobile and am on a plan with my husband. Anytime we call each other, we don't get charged time against our minutes. My mom and my older brother also have T-Mobile, and we don't get charged for that either. We have unlimited "mobile to mobile" minutes on our plan, so if we call (or receive calls) from anyone else who has T-Mobile, it doesn't count against our regular minutes.

BUT...we don't spend hours on the phone talking to our friends. If you do, you might look at their Fave Five plan. You get unlimited minutes to any 5 phone numbers, but the drawback is that you have hardly any minutes to spend on all of the rest of the numbers you call, or who call you.

Try to determine how you use your phone the most. If you don't make a lot of calls, but people call you all the time, you might want to check out a carrier that has unlimited incoming calls (I think that one is US Cellular).

You can usually get a better deal on minutes if you share a plan with someone. For example if you have a roommate, go in together on a plan and agree to share the minutes 50/50. That can be a headache if you start going over you minutes every month, and you have to go through the bill line by line to figure out who owes how much.

One thing you should be aware of, though, is that if you call 911 in an emergency, your land line will show up with your address, whereas your cell phone won't. If you have kids or elderly people at home, I'd recommend keeping your land line for safety purposes.
