Question:

Would vegans eat cloned meat?

since the meat doesnt come from "mis-treated" animals, and it didnt come from something that suffered, would they eat it?

(since, to my knowledge, the mis-treatment of animals is the reason why most vegans, choose to become vegan)

  1. I don't know if they would or not-- the animals weren't mistreated, but you're still eating meat.

But my vegan friends wouldn't eat meat anymore even if they decided not to be vegan-- They just don't eat it, it's their lifestyle.

  2. Um. You mean, like, they just cloned the meat as muscle tissue, rather than the entire animal? Ew.

I mean, it's possible, but there are plenty of reasons not to. (We don't know that much about the safety of it, I have no idea what the environmental consequences would be, it's probably still going to be full of saturated fat, it's still meat and would probably not taste all that great to vegans, etc.)

  3. Even most meateaters probably won't eat so to ask vegans if they would is a bit of a stretch.

  4. h**l no.

  5. its a living animal that deserves to live just as much as anything else, so no.

  6. I'm vegan and that sounds just disgusting.  I did become a vegan for ethical reasons, but I won't even eat genetically altered vegetables...so I sure wouldn't eat genetically modified meat.

I became vegan for the ethical reasons, but then I found out it's better for my health and the environment.  I am sure not going back now...especially for some cloned meat.  If they could clone meat they would only find out later that it causes cancer or something anyway.

In short I am totally not interested.

PS:  Just because an animal is cloned doesn't mean it is no longer an animal and it can't suffer.  Dolly the sheep was cloned and they didn't kick her around for the fun of it.  I don't think your question was very well thought out.  Happy 4th:)

  7. I imagine no because meat is meat no matter how it came about. Vegetarians are just that... vegetarians (people that just prefer fruits and veggies in their diet vs meat).  Although I do believe that the mistreatment of animals does play a huge role in their decision to become vegetarian,  I still don't believe they would eat it even if it was cloned for other heath issues.

  8. A cloned animal is still an animal. Why would you think a cloned animal would not suffer? A cloned animal is not "synthetic"--they just have genetic material that was taken from another animal. Meat from a cloned animal is still meat from an animal. There isn't any difference.

  9. "Cloned" meat would mean meat from clones, which are living, breathing animals that would have to be slaughtered.

I assume instead that you mean donor cells that are cultured in a vat of nutrient-rich broth and grown into meat without the death of an animal.  I am vegan and I would not consider eating that for a moment.  It's still flesh and I don't consider flesh food, nor do I consider eating any form of flesh vegan.  However, this is being worked on and I do see it as a viable alternative for meat eaters who would like to reduce animal suffering but don't wish to commit to eliminating meat from their diet, IF it's marketable, of course.  The question isn't really whether vegans would eat it, it's whether meat eaters would eat it.

  10. I am not a veg*an but I would be very hesitant to eat test tube 'meat'.

  11. I don't like the taste of meat, so I wouldn't.  I think it would be pretty hard to convince anyone to eat cloned meat.  It will take a long time.

  12. They might, as you say they don't eat meat because of the animal's suffering. However, I am not a vegan by any means, and I would not eat cloned meat.

  13. Doesn't the meat have to come from a living clone? Does the clone suffer any more or less than the animal it was made from? If a vegan did eat it, I would laugh at them and call them a hypocrite I suppose. Me, I will eat it cloned or not!

    Mmmm Meat.
