Ok so my brother is in university and is in his 2nd yr as a medical student. I would like to be a doctor too and we'd both like to specialize in the future.

We live in Malta, a really small island in the middle of the mediterranean sea and we're Europeans and in the EU.

Would we be able to live, work and study in the USA?

Also, which states are best in your opinion?

10q and whoever answers them all will in the best manner will get 10 points!

  1. The U.S. Department of State handles visa applications . . . try their website . . . you should be able to get a "study" visa but it does not necessarily allow you to work while you are in the country . . . again try the web site.

  2. It might be possible to do an internship or residency under the J visa program. Of course, it would be possible to study medicine in the US on a student visa, assuming you were accepted as a med student to begin with.  Generally, it's difficult for foreign doctors to practice medicine in the US, unless they already have a green card. Aside from the accreditation problems, passing all the boards, etc., most doctors aren't eligible for an employment related visa unless they are willing to practice medicine in an area that is chronically short of medical care. So, if you're willing to open a practice in a very rural area or maybe in an inner city area, you would have a shot, but you won't be free to pick and choose all that much, at first anyway.

  3. Maryland is a wonderful state...close to DC, public transportation, National Institute of Health, Tons of hospitals.

  4. I know Malta!! I also know people who've been there and said it was very nice  :)   Hopefully I can visit some day.

    1.  You would be able to study, live and work in USA.   There are forms you must fill out and such.  It's a lot of information so it's just easier if you go to the websites I've posted.

    2.  You want to know which states are best...what you need to look at first is which schools in america are going to have the medical program you are looking for.  So I'd consider that first, then determine where those schools are and pick from THAT list.  You should also answers some questiions like - do I want to live in a city or a town.  i would also look at the affiliations that these med schools have with hospitals.  There's a lot to look into.  I'd start with those as a base.  And you should be ok.

    To Study in the US:

    For Employment in the US:

    Good luck!

  5. Since your brother is already in his second year of med school, it is unlikely that he can transfer to a US medical school.  He should forget about trying to get a student visa now.  Also with a medical degree, he will have an involved process trying to qualify as a doctor in the US after he graduates.  He would have to prove his educational credentials are the same as the US, and he would have to take his board exams in the state where he wants to practice.

As for you, if you were accepted into a US medical school after you graduate from college, you could get a student visa to attend med school.  You would have to prove you have sufficient funds for your school expenses and all of your living expenses, plus your transportation home upon completion of your studies.  Students are forbidden to work on student visas.  Plus med school is so demanding that you cannot take a job and complete your studies.  You will be doing rotations in hospitals (unpaid -- it's part of the course curriculum), and simply cannot attend classes, do homework, do rotations, and still work some kind of job.  You will need about US$250,000 for school and living expenses.

There is no way either of you can go to school, plus work, plus live in the US.  If you have the money, apply for US med schools during your senior year in college.  And if your brother can meet all of the requirements, he can apply for employment after he finishes med school.

How could you give up living in Malta?  The taxes in the US will kill you!
