Referring to Scotland.

I don't want opinions or thoughts from arrogant English OR proud Scots.

I want facts.

Could we cope, really?

Is there anything we would struggle with?

If you make one, single, less than friendly comment on England or Scotland, you will be reported.

  1. Perhaps you could start with reporting yourself "arrogant English or proud Scots" is not exactly neutral is it?

This is a very complex question and one I feel that is beyond the ordinary man in the street.  Yes, people can make generalisations and little else, how for example, would you divide up the nations (United Kingdoms) wealth equably so that an independent Scotland received its fair share?  And so on, the list would seem endless.

Alex Salmond has promised the Scottish people a referendum on full independence in 2010, roughly at the same time as a UK general election, why wait `till then?  As the former leader of the labour party in Scotland said, not too long ago, "bring it on", or words to that effect.

  2. You would qualify for lots of EU aid money, so the English would end up paying for you as now.

  3. I think England is a little pig-headed thinking they have any authority over scotland or ireland

You should stage a revolution like america did.  While you are at it, take Canada away from England too.

yes, that was a less than friendly comment about england, and its not against yahoo answers to say something like that, so report away.

  4. as an englishman (of indian origin) who likes scots, i think it would be better for both parties to be seperate. i think scotland is strong enough to cope, but it would be very hard at the beginning. alot of english money goes north of the border, FAR more than what comes south.

in a couple of generations, scotland would recover and become a stronger, prouder and more focussed nation.

  5. If they gained recognition from the EU they would be fine just as other small nations in europe which would probably happen if referendum found in favour of Scottish independence, but why would they want to the Scots have the second highest public spending per head after NI in the UK and the English having the lowest despite them making up most of the UK's economy.

  6. Absolutely!

  7. ummm... we are separated from England

  8. Yes of course you can cope.   Off you go then, don`t forget to take Gordon Brown and Alistair Darling with you please.

  9. firstly, I will correct your question,

Will Scotland Cope being entirly seperate from the United Kingdom?

Scotland already has devolutionary power which has seperated Scotland from Westminster and the UK parliament however scotland is still answerable to Westminster and the Houses of Parilament. scotland has it's own power to make certain laws and increase Tax, however these again can be over ridden by the Uk Parliament.

Scotland can be seperated from the rest of the UK, But i seriously do not understand why they would want to. Together we are united, hence the name united kingdom.

Most of the Scotish funds come from Westminster, therefore if Scotland was to be completly independant the first thing scotland would see is huge Tax increases, just to support your own economy.

As a welsh-man, i have this same problem, some of these out-spoken idiots want wales completley independant, with no influence from 'english people' i.e. westminster. however they only would appreciate the title and do not fully understand the consequences, we would have to form our own parliament from new, adopt all new or existing laws into this new seperated countries law, then increases Taxes, reform our Judiciary, create boarders, which will then require Passport entrance, etc, it would be like starting from new, people would fall into poverty, the NHS could crumble etc.

To be honest ask yourself one question, would you really want to, i know i wouldn't. Things would just be to complicated! and i appreciate the fact now that if my local government (the Welsh Assembly) would c**k up, i have westminster to turn to, who can override any law they pass, and the same goes for the Scotish Parliament.

Not a good idea, it can be done, but there are too many consequences.

    Hope it helps

  10. No!Why?Orders for government shipyards would dry up for a start! The English and Welsh taxpayer would no longer pump billions of pounds sterling into the Scottish economy! That is why I am all for Scottish Independence!

  11. Necessity is the mother of invention.  If England cut off its support of Scotland, it might be difficult to get by for a long time but eventually Scotland would recover and become strong again.  That's what it is to be a celt.

  12. i think Scotland would cope eventually. it would just take a few years to get things worked out. but with the help of the EU it should be OK. Scotland has wanted away from England since day one, and the English people have ever!! looked on in confusion as to why the Scottish people hate us so much? but that's always been the way of it. i think perhaps Scotland's independence is long awaited by both sides....and long over due.
