Question:

Would you Say you Understand what your Cat is Saying?

It's totally weird when I tell people who do not own a pet, that I understand what my cat is saying when she meows in different ways. She also understands alot of words, like: dinner, catch it{she comes running to gobble up the spider}, look {to catch a mouth/sometime airborn}, jump, and 'No'.

  1. I totally get it.  My cat has different tones depending on what she's trying to say to me, and I understand all of them.  She also understands some words, too.  So I think cats are a lot smarter than some people give them credit for.  After all, my kitty not only talks to me and understands me, she's trained me to respond to her demands.

  2. Of course, they have different tones just like we do. I know when my cat is real hungry, it sounds like she's yelling at me to feed her. When she's happy and wants to be patted, she chirps. They can and do communicate with us.

  3. i can totally relate..lol

i understand alot of what phoenix ( my cat) has to say  with certain meows, purrs also.  whether it be food, a treat, petted, or just to play.

He also seems to understand alot of what i have to say to him, but def understands certain words ( pretty much the same you described)

my fiance makes fun of me for talking to my cat when he is on my lap being petted..lol

  4. I understand completely!!!!

my baby male cat is so whiny but each meow has a slightly different pitch that no one else can understand, but i can tell when its early and its a little squeakier he wants food.  when he wants in a room, when he wants to be held and babied, when he wants to play.  and his eyes get really wide when he is surprised by a shadow on the wall and more crosseyed when he is watching a bug even if i cant see the bug at first.

  5. My cat tends to be the quiet kind, only rarely meowing (except when I'm trying to sleep but he's lonely at 1 in the morning). He's like a mime cat or something though; and he's very good at what he does. When he wants to go outside or to have food he points with his body and tries to lure us closer to it. When he wants attention he sits nearby, within arms reach and stares at us, and when he wants to play he attacks random objects around the house--our ankles too!

it's not weird to know what your cat wants, cats are very good at making their opinions known.

  6. Oh totally.  I know exactly what she's telling me.  You're right, people who don't own a pet, particularly a cat, don't get this.

  7. It's not weird.  my cat is the same way.  for example, if he starts chewing on my fingers he's saying he's hungry.  animals and humans can easily understand each other if the human takes the time to notice its behavioral patterns.

  8. My cat doesn't even have to meow for me to know what she's saying, just a certain look tells me what she wants. Same with puppy and even my bird. After a while you can get the gist of what they're trying to tell you. Sad part is, they probably have you trained better than you think :D

I know I'm well trained. I pet on command and everything.

  9. i do understand. I can say "Look," and my cat will come running
