  1. The thing with english shows is that the show itself costs so much money.

I could tell you right now I spent 10,000 at my first show after I bought everything..

    my saddle was 4,000

    bridle was 300

    Sheepskin fitted saddle pad: 200

    martingale: 200

leather open front boots and back boots: 400

    Riding jod's:140

    Tall boot socks: 10

    Tall boots: 400

    White shirt: 100

    Hunt coat: 600

    Helmet: 550

    Gloves: 20

    All leather Girth: 200

****Total for show EQUIPTMENT only: 7120*****

then theres you daily stall fee at 150 a day

    shavings: 8 per bag

trailer fee:(depends were the show is) usually about 175

    class fee: 30 PER CLASS

(if you dont hve a horse)Horse lease fee: 277$

    shooling fee's: 50 per day

non showing day:60 per day(to feed water nd care for horse)

    Trainer fees:100

    Entry fees:125

Hotel (most shows are quite a ways of driving): 100 per night

most shows are 4 days. thursday ( you arrive and ship in horses)

    friday ( jumper classes)

    saturday ( hunter classes)

    sunday ( equatation classes)(medal classes)

****total for SHOWING fee's: about 2000 dollars*****

  2. IDK

but i love western. I think it is more beautiful then english. Reminds me of the good old days when gas was 99 cents a gallon! lol.

  3. depends wehre you live.

here its dirt cheap, shows every weekend

but jumpers is expensive and finding shows is rare

  4. Not so much...

English saddles cost the same (nice ones)

    $1000 tall boots

    $100-$500 helmet

$500 hunt coat (most have more than one)

    $600-$800 shadbelly

    $500 chaps to school in

    $200 paddock boots

$100 show shirts (most have a few for each coat)

I could go on, but there is way too much to list.

Showing is expensive, it doesn't matter if it's english or western.

  5. Dressage -- (I personally think it ALL is expensive, and I'm not sure, but here's an idea here)

$2000 saddle (can EASILY for higher lvled riders be more, a good good quality custom fit saddle is crazy...)

$100 saddle pad + half pad my horse requires which is another $100.

$700 jacket (and we're talking fairly nice quality, i'm not gunna go into shadbelly for myself...)

    $100 breeches

$500 boots (assuming we aren't going TOO expensive, which I try to avoid with my limited income -- but at the same time, decent quality that'll work. I got mine for a steal at 250 on sale)

$100+ for a top hat (or have a used velvet helmet worth at least 75 that someone gave me, THANK GOD FOR PEOPLE <3)

$200+ for a nice bridle, not even going into double bridle. mine was 200 (not a double.. lol)

Trailer + pickup = same as anything else

at least $400 to enter classes at lower level, entering 2 horses and only showing 2-3 times. :x probably more blah.

Lets assume we DON'T have to use spurrs, whips, etc. That at least cuts back SOME!

Then, if you're showing dressage you have 2 things you must be registered for.

    USDF

    and USEF

The horses must have the registration numbers for both and the people must too. Coggins (which I'm absolutely sure western shows have too, I'm not sure about rodeos o_O...) tests on the horses, etc. etc.

I'm sure it probably evens out in the long run.

Oh and don't even go into really expensive shirts and ties and pins and stuff, I go with the bare minimum with my money!

Plus, how much do you guys pay per lesson? A good dressage lesson can be around $100 dollars.... oi. for a 45 minute lesson. lol.

  6. I have only experiance showing western but I think that you let showing be as expensive as you allow it. Everything with horses can be expensive. I think with all horse shows, western and english, the higher level you show the more money you are going to pay. I think that its stupid to try to compare because there really is NO RIGHT answer. If you get the top of the line everything then yeah its going to seem really expensive and if you can afford it great but if not like me then you make do with what you have maybe buy some new things every now and then and you just show and have a good time.

  7. I would say western cost's more. All the stupid silver and bling bling c**p. A horse could die of embarrassment!

Years of breeding to get horses to trip over there nose and look totally fake when catering and doing a jog trot is not cheap.

I ride western, but I have to ask what silver and crystals have to do with showing what horse is capable of. It just shows who has the most money.

Except for the guys. It's so stupid. Is it a horse show or a Miss Universe contest?

  8. I believe its all in the eye of the beholder, and the level of showing you're doing.  Atleast where I am if you're doing saddle club type shows, your tack just needs to be in good condition, and you dont have to worry too too much about the fancy silver and such. Shirts don't have to be fancy, just long sleeved and buttoned down. Chaps aren't necesarry, but boot cut jeans are. Again, these are just saddle club, schooling level shows.

In this case, I can see the english classes costing more, as I find much of the english stuff is just like going out to buy brand name jeans, purses and so much more. If you're in the hunter ring and you don't have the latest fashion (which will run you through the nose price wise) you wont place as well, because you dont have that 'look'.

Still, it really just depends on the type of show and the clubs/shows dress requirements. This is however, just my opinion.

  9. Lets put it into perspective.

English horse.... Some scopy long legged thing that has no other skill other than extension and roached back... $50K

Saddle... Pessoa of course, nothing less will do... $3K

Bridle... finest grain rolled leather because, gosh darnit, I'm worth it... $300

Hunt coat, styling with pleated sides to hide the muffin top....$300

Shirt.. ebay simply will not do, dover the whole way.. $80

Breeches.. With the sucky in tops to hide the 'bounce' $70

Plus a lifetime supply of liposuction or barfing after every meal, whatevers cheaper and easier.

J/KKKKKKKKKK lol  but some of it has some truth to it.

    Ok so western here...

WP horse.. has points, shown successfully in youth... $15K

Show blouse, with all the bling, still barf after every mean to hide the muffin top.... $300

Saddle with the bling ... $5K, and thats being generous.

although if you go with the stellar pirate saddle, $25K

    Chaps...$300

    Bridle..with bling... $200

I think western has english beat, simply on horse price alone.

  10. I think they are both very expensive. I show western and know kids that have easily a 3000 out fit. Not to mention the cost of the shows 400 plus for my local AQHA show. But i guess it would be no different in the English world.

  11. Hmmm...well, you can purchase all of the items above for way cheaper.  As with English, you can kind of make showing cost as much or as little as you want.  H

However, over all, I believe that there are a lot more English-based events that have giagantic entery fees than western-based.

As far as the paraphenalia, it is proabaly a wash.

  12. I think english shows are more expensive. Specifically hunters.

Horse (that is extremely overpriced cause it hunters) ------ 50,000 and more if you REALLY want to win

    Pessoa ----- 3000

    Tailored Sportsman Coat ----- 400

    Half Pad ------ 150

Normal Pad (cause the cheap kind isnt as purdy) ----- 100

    Girth (only leather) ----- 150

    Bridle ----- 300

Then the fancy trainer and entry fees. Yep its expensive. And why I hated it.

  13. yea, cuz western saddles are WAY more expensive, and alot of times in english, you can get hand-me-downs that are great, because the boots are broken in, so are the saddles, and theyre easier to wear.

  14. Well it's not like you need to buy a new saddle every time you show. I've never heard of a thousand dollar shirt. Unless you meant a hundred dollars, whichc is about how much a hunter's shirt is. Plus, English riders have to buy coats, which are about 300 bucks. As for the chaps, that's how much a pair of boots is. I'd say it's all about the same. Anything with horses is expensive!

  15. HELLL NO.  English cost so much. I been in western, it is so much more relaxed.

I just started english and i am about to shoot myself because of it. its so much
