Would you agree with this statement about the American recession in the 80's?

While many American's suffered during the economic recession nearing the point of a depression, the people with good paying steady jobs had fun in the 80's.

I can't quote exactly but this is the jist of what I heard somewhere.

because they were high on coke and PCPs, they didn't know they were miserable.

when the stock market crashed in the 20's  alcohol was illegal, so instead of everyone getting drunk, they jumped out of buildings.
