the ghost of the meadow
a fiend, a faun, a road through the willows, a sky broken by rain
a song sung across a misty meadow, Lord, Lord won't you help me
I followed the call of that voice full of sorrow, and I'll tell you what I did see
a house made of mud by the shores of a river, a shroud of linen white and clean
dressed all in black was the girl with the yellow eyes, cloudy, and lost in a dream
and holding her babe close in her arms she sang "don't leave me now, don't leave me, not after what's become of me
my man lies bleeding far away from here, he left me and went 'cross the sea, and only returns as a vision to me
can you save me from my destiny, and carry me far from here?
I'll go to him, I'll go to him, and he shall know that it's me"
across the meadow, over mosses and sedges, I carried the girl and her babe
but when we came to the edge of the forest, they turned and looked at me
across the face of the girl and her daughter came horror and sorrow and tears
