I'm a cashier at a store where basically no one comes, so I'm deeply absorbed in my book when this guy walks in and suddenly goes, "Hi!"...and I get startled and jump up! GOD that was embarrassing!

Yea, I work access control at a gate and during the downtime I'll read and occasionally a truck driver will sneak up without me knowing and scare the living c**p out of me. I just smile and laugh.
