Question:

Would you be mad at this situation ?

I am a cashier at Kroger and I was talking to my supervisor this morning about working schedule. I told her that whenever she needs me to work extra hours, I'll be glad to do so. Five minutes before I leave, she came by my register and asked if I can stay for another hour. I had to say no because my ride is waiting at the door and that my friend, who is my coworker and who would be riding with me home, refused to stay. I feel so guilty about that now. If you were happen to be my supervisor, how would you feel ?

Please be honest! Your answer is going to help me make better decision next time. Thanks !

  1. I wouldn't have a bad feeling. It was short notice. If you'd have been free-- great. If not, no hard feelings. You had a valid reason.  Ask her to give you a little more advanced warning.

  2. Bad timing! I think its good that you let her know that you can work extra hours. In your part, I don't think that it's your fault or anything. Your supervisor may see if as 'Oh, if you can't work extra hours, then don't say you can.' But, if she's going to tell you on such late notice, I don't think you should have to. I just hope you explained to her why you weren't able to work that day. I would be a little upset but nothing too big to be mad about.

  3. dont worry your supiverison should have givin you more notice! and you should not be taken advantage of just because you made an offer!

  4. She didn't give you any notice, that is not the same as asking you and you being able to check your calendar and make arrangements so that you can get picked up later, etc.

  5. It wasn't right of your supervisor to ask you at the end of your shift to stay longer.

As long as you explained the situation to her, then I don't think she'll be mad.  Just tell her that next time, you do need advance warning because you need to tell your ride.  Honestly, if someone is picking you up, you can't expect them to wait for an hour.

Hopefully she'll still give you more shifts.  I would just talk to her, perhaps say, "I'm sorry about last shift.  I really would have loved to stay and work, but I do get a ride home from work and I can't ask her to wait.  I do need advance warning if you want me to stay later, just so I can arrange things with my ride"

  6. Tell her you need more notice than 5 minutes in the future, say atleast an hour.

  7. I think 5 minutes notice is ridiculous.  If I were your supervisor, I would understand that I did not give you much notice for this hour and it would have no bearing on future extra hours.

  8. Your supervisor was in the wrong, not you. She needs to give you more of a heads up. I would be angry at the supervisor, not guilty. :)

  9. You shouldn't feel guilty about it.  You need to have transportation plans set before you can make a decision to alter your work hours.  That have to be understanding.  You could tell them the plans and see if they can arrange to fix it Maybe they can  arrange rides for the appropriate people. If they can't provide transportation,  then... THEY can't. Management in a grocery store is a little off.  Most of them are a little irrational.  They are not always the same type of understanding people you would find in business world.  Don't stay more than 5 years.  I was in it for 10 years.

  10. I think you should have been more specific, like you could work extra hours anytime, except today because your friend is giving you a ride, that would have sealed the deal, but hey, it's okay, we all learn from mistakes, and I don't think your supervisor should be mad at you, she should understand and appreciate you for making yourself available. Cheer up.

  11. She knew that you may not be able to stay when she asked you.   Don't sweat it.

  12. its okay. it happens to me too.

if you explain that you need a heads up next time, then she shouldnt get too mad

  13. If I were your supervisor, I would wonder why you just told me you were willing to stay whenever I needed you to work extra hours. Let her know you didn't mean quite so last minute as you do need to consider transportation; she'll understand...or she should!
