I'm currently in my last year of high school and I'm applying to a college that's about an hour and 15-30 min. away by car. And that's without traffic =) So that makes a total of about 3 hrs of total commute everyday...would you do it?

For me, the college is too close to dorm but yet I feel it's too far to drive an hour and a half to back and forth everyday.

  1. up to 45 minutes, yes, over an hour? I'd have to not be driving and on a bus where I could get stuff done. Right now I drive my car back and forth 30-40 minutes and it's a pain in my backside.

  2. That's not too close to dorm at all.  I knew people that lived 20 minutes away and stayed in the dorms.

Dorms are a valuable experience, and at many colleges you will not be able to get the full college experience unless you live on campus.  If you're really trying to save money, you can get an apartment 10-15 minutes away from campus and drive or take  a bus.  Otherwise, definitely go for dorms your first year.

  3. Live in the dorm. 75 minutes one way is too much. Think how much study time you'll be loosing.

If you don't want to live in the dorm, look for a college closer to home if available.

  4. Go live in the dorm. College life isn't just about classes. It's about being around after classes too. You'll be able to meet more people & bond.

You don't want to be a 9 to 5 student & 3 hrs/day commuting = 15 hours out of your week. That time can be better spent studying, working on a campus job or internship that exposes you to other fields of study, team sports, clubs, etc.

My husband was in a similar situation & is very glad he decided to live in an apartment near campus as a transfer student. He's still friends w/ a couple of his roommates and is sure he wouldn't have enjoyed college as much if he had been a commuter. He came from a small town & the move exposed him to lots of different people; it opened his eyes to a whole new world.

  5. live in the dorm and come home on weekends

  6. If its worth it to you then yeah I suppose I would.  All you can really do in that situation is pros and cons.  Whatever decision you make good luck.
