  1. Cyprus is Cypriotoc,Clturally speaking is similar ,very similar to Greece, but Cyprus is for Cypriots.

    edit:

Lady S,you forget that after 34 years ,the Turkish troops are still at Cyprus,if they leave then they ll be united....Simple as that, but they don't remove the troops...

you said"should not invade " but you didnt said they should take all the troops from there...Not united is a form of defense because they have 34 years now their troops there....

If someone should make a move should be the troops out of Cyprus NOW.i mean come on,its not '74 but its 2008!!!

But still Cyprus is Cypriot -end of story

  2. Not only I would, but I DO consider it Greek. Where I live, Serbia, it's the predominant belief and reality. You say Cyprus, and the first association that comes to mind is Greece. That's not just a sentiment, though, it's based on Cyprus's historical, cultural&overall background.

But I don't quite understand the purpose of such questions in the Greek travel section. They will invariably stir trouble, provocative as they are by nature.

If you only want to pass a diagnosis test and see who's who - then it's pretty obvious: you have hardline Greeks, politically correct Greeks, hardline Turks, a couple of real foreigners and the rest are trolls, i.e. wannabe Greeks. No surprise there: everybody lived to their expectations.

Maybe it's better to keep the title of this section in mind - Greece Travel Section

edit: "damo", zini da ti kažem:)

  3. The Southern part yes, why not?

Aww too bad that neither your eeni meeni thumbs down along with your wailings nor the countries that do not recognize TRNC can wipe the Northern part and its inhabitants off the map. A man of average intelligence but of good eye sight once said, just because you refuse to see it, doesn't mean it does not exist.

Edit: Yes the Turkish army *all of a sudden*, out of evil designs as usual, decided to take a stroll in the streets of Cyprus in 1974. Don't you think this scenario is losing its originality? If the Turkish army hadn't interfered there would be no Turk left on the island and every child would end up like this: http://www.politikcity.de/mkportal/modul...

This happened not so long ago, Turkish Cypriots aren't making things up. These people are still, very fortunately ALIVE. While you're at it, don't forget to say hello to Sampson.

  4. I have waited a lot to answer the question, l 've read so many claims, arguments etc. Time has come to write my point of view as a Greek - CypriotWe Cypriots are Hellenes of heritage, "ethnicity, customs etc. Are more Greeks than Greeks living in today Greece. We have kept our heritage through all the catastrophes, through all the wars through all the centruries. Yes we have had many influences from other civilizations such as the Romans, Venice even from the Ottomans but that simply made us more adjustable.

We are Greeks living in Cyprus!

  5. Cyprus is mainly Greek, with deep Greek heritage as others said. Many people have passed from the island as conquerors, due to it's strategic location, but the Greek element is very dominant throughout history, and there is no doubt about it. As for ♥ ☼ ♫ I. A. ♫ ☼ ♥ is either kid imo or grown up with a kid's mind which is even worse. Yeah and Constantinople (Istanbul) is mine because it has 5.000 Greeks along with a Greek Patriarch, give us a break. By that logic of yours, Greeks and Turks should not live in the same place without killing each other. Thank god some of your politicians are way smarter than many of you.

Edit: Also, i would like to add that many of the bad things towards Turks (if not ALL of them) happened in a period when Greece was ruled by generals of the army, and it wasn't a democracy at that period! Problem is while Greece had recovered democracy and tried hard and successfully to push generals aside (add to that that being a member of EU requires democracy) , Turkey is still struggling in a way. So right now, if anyone has to worry more is Greece, and not Turkey and Turks imo.

Also my personal opinion is that Islamic Turks are better people than Kemalists, as weird as that may sound to a westerner. It is somehow like the communist thing were the atheists communists, did things that religious people would never do. I think that religion in today's society unlike the past, it is not a reason of atrocities as some people like to pass it. Bad people are the reason for atrocities, and as recent history showed they are not quite religious as some want to pass them.

And just another Macedonian, while i do not condone such acts,  i understand them after the bombardment of spam from Fyromian's in the Greek section, doing the exactly same thing you accuse us of. If you consider it ugly, then don't do it yourself first. As i said in another question, Greeks tend to reflect the feelings of foreigners back to them like a mirror, if positive you receive positive, if negative you receive negative. Sorry to break it down to you but the ugly thing you witnessed was in reality yourselves in the mirror ;-).

Edit 2: Hülya, your example is very bad actually, it would be similar if USA had 230.000.000 native americans and the rest were immigrants. Is that the case?

As for sending the Turks away, noone said anything about sending a single Turk away(except the army of course)! Just stop having such a big complex about living in the same state with Greeks, without it being a Turkish state! If Greeks had the same mentality like you, we wouldn't stop killing each other until no one is left. And if i judge from your sayings you are from USA right? How can you not have a problem living in USA without being under a turkish state, but when it comes to Greece, OMG you can't handle it and want a Turkish state? Ahh, too much complex you have there i guess.

  6. Yes of course, Cyprus is a Greek island, and about Northern Cyprus  that some users above said, tell me which countries recognize the Northern part? The answer is only Turkey. Like Greek barbie said, there is only ONE republic of Cyprus, Northern Cyprus is illegeally occupied and not-recognized by any country. Peace.

  7. i just  want to refer to Just Another Macedonian or else Fyromian....!You are totally false about Greek and your notion that we are nationalists! We just support our history! The fact that Macedonia is Greek is widely known!I think that Fyromians are behaving too cruely and fanaticaly against us...We try to have good relations with our neighbors but as it seems you don't want, to according to Gruefsky's speeches!

    Am I right??????

But these are FYROMIANS......people don't change!

Never mind...I consider you as friends and I''m waiting you to nice Greece to treat you a greek ouzo or tsipouro!

  8. OK, I know this is not my business and I don't want to get anyone angry, but I see that many Greeks (if not most) think that Cyprus should be united with Greece. If I remember correctly, that is exactly why the Turks occupied northern Cyprus - because Greeks wanted to unite it with Greece. Like I said many times before, I think that Cyprus should have been an independent country with both Greeks and Turks (and all the others who live there) living together in peace. It doesn't matter that they were a minority by your standards, they should have had equal rights. The ideal situation would be if it was just a normal country where all its citizens would live in peace and harmony, no matter if they are Greek or Turkish or something else, and if they could get along perfectly. Unfortunately, that wasn't the case. I agree that it was wrong to invade Northern Cyprus and I never approve any violent way to solve problems, but there were Turks living in Cyprus and they were not treated properly and of course they couldn't have let you unite Cyprus with Greece. Try to think this way: If Cyprus was mostly Turkish and if there were 18% of Greeks living there, would you let it unite with Turkey?

To Goxy: And what do you call yourself, if not a foreigner? You're not Cypriot, you're not Greek and certainly not Turkish. So?

To Goxy again: You know, you could get reported for that last part. Of course, I could answer in the same manner (or even worse), but that's not my level.

To Vasiliki: Yes, I know that. I said that they shouldn't have invaded Northern Cyprus, that's not the right way to sort things out. I know that Northern Cyprus is considered an illegal country and it is not recognised. All I'm saying is, Turks in Cyprus were not treated properly and it would have been even worse if Cyprus had united with Greece. It shouldn't be a part of Greece or Turkey, or anyone's colony. It should be free, united and independent, and all of his inhabitants should have equal rights.

EDIT AGAIN: OK, in the ideal world they should remove the troops, but if someone can guarantee that both people would live in peace and not kill each other. And even though I personally don't care much about Cyprus, in some way I do care, because I have a similar situation here in my country. We want Bosnia to be united, but Serbs took half of Bosnia and want to unite it with Serbia. That's why I think all countries should be united, please no more wars and no more dividing countries.

To Greeting_Losers: You're right, in the ideal world there would be no troops at all. In the ideal world there would be no wars and people wouldn't be dying. Oh, well.

By the way, Greeting_Losers, I don't agree with you that countries should be divided. What if Belgium, Switzerland and all the multi-ethnical countries divide? There will be many small countries and it will be a loss for everyone. Ex-Yugoslavia indeed fell apart because of the Serbian politics, but I still think it would have been better if we could have lived together in peace. So what if there are different religions, different cultures etc.? Do you know how many different ethnicities live, for example, in the USA or Australia etc.? Why couldn't all people live in peace? But, in the case of ex-Yugoslavia it went terribly wrong and it was Serbian fault. I really don't know what you guys will do with Cyprus, I just think there should be no wars and all people should get along well.

  9. Re paidiaa... today is today and today they are Cypriots!!

We are in 2008 (HELLOOOO) It's not 400 ago.

Most of them fell like Greek and when I look at them I don't see any difference but I can't say that CYPRUS IS GREEK, because today CYPRUS IS CYPRIOT!

It's a country wich speak Greek... that's It.

Just like Mexico speak spanish and before was colonized by the spaniard!

    But today Mexico is Mexico!

Why should I say that Cyprus is Greek???

oi amerikanoi, oi astralezoi, oi maltezoi, oi irlandoi miloun anglika...pai na pei einai englezoi??

oi me3ixanoi, oi argendinoi, oi peritianoi miloun ispanika...pai na pei einai ispanoi???

mbrosta prepei na vlepoume k oxi 4000 prin!!!!!!!!

  10. First of all, there is only one Republic of Cyprus that is universally recognized. The Northern part is illegally occupied and the only country that recognizes it is Turkey.

Ethnically & historically Cypriots are Greek, culturally Cyprus always had strong ties with Greece, but being so far away Cyprus has adopted other elements/traditions to it including a strong dialect, and making its culture more Cypriot. So like Vassiliki and Andreas above said ..Cyprus is Cypriotic & lived by Greeks.

  11. Yeah, Cyprus is Greek just like USA are Native Indians...

If you thnk Turks should go, so you certainly want Europeans and Africans to leave the US as well, right ?... Very logical, indeed...

  12. These are the facts, like it or not:

    1. The majority of the population of Cyprus has been Greek for more than 3500 years. Do you know many places on earth who can compete with that?

    2. The dominating civilization in Cyprus is the Hellenic civilization, constantly for more than 3500 years. ( Many people don't know that Cyprus has been Greek before Doric tribes take over Macedonia ).

    3. Today Cyprus is not a part of Greece (unfortunately) but Cyprus is another Greek country.

    4. The fact that Cyprus has some kind of minorities doesn't made it less Greek than any other place in Greece. All Greece had minorities before freedom. Every country on earth has minorities. Is France less French because they have a German minority?

    5. There was never a Cypriot nationality. The Greeks of Cyprus consider their selves Greeks all through history. Especially in Roman and Byzantine times the Cypriots never called their selves Romioi or anything similar to that. During the Ottoman times Greek Cypriots joined the other Greeks in many revolutions.

    6. Since 1821 Greek Cypriots were always there in the wars of the nation as volunteers, without profit at all but with the hope that some day Cyprus will be free and united with Greece.

All that and more made Cyprus Greek as much as Greece. Even if there was no Greece, Cyprus is still Greek because it has its own Greek history and civilization for the last 4 millenniums.

Edit: Friends, Cyprus is Greek even if it's not a part of Greece. Don't confuse nationality that's Greek with citizenship that's Cypriot.

Greek by nationality are also the Northern Epirotes, the Greeks of Australia and many others. Cypriots by citizenship are Greeks, Turks, Armenians and others.

  13. its funny you..have included all those countrie that ruled cyprus..yet today ...they still preffer to speak a strong ancient dialect of greek...yet they dont speak any of the other laungages of those countries you mentioned ..BLUNT!...oh for sure they have to understand  turkish as  they have to know what sneaky attacks..the turks might be up too.. once is enough..never again.and to the questioner ..with out a doubt ..cyprus is CYPRIOT  FIRST .WITH STRONG GREEK HERITAGE...BUT IT IS A COUNTRY ON TO ITS SELF AS RECONIZED BY THE  UNIDTED NATIONS.. the only cypriot flag to fly in the UN... THE white backround with a dove of peace with an olive branch in it's beak in the centre of the flag.............added ..BLUNT..it is sentiments like that that people think yeah lets partion it..then we can behave like little kids and every one will be happy... its if you treating greek and turkish cypriots like bad kids and you being the teacher controlling the situation through the act of partion...when in reality and to the eyes of the world the turkish military .INVADED the cypriot greek soil..with out any malice towards the turks .the  greek cypriots allowed all the turks to live on greek cypriot soil..yet the turkish military sought an excuse to invade cyprus and make it its own..not only did they massacre defenseless people and rob of them of thier land and possesions but instead of defeding the turkish poplutaion in the region they where in .The turkIish army just decided to advance thier attack as far as FARMAGUSTA. becuase they just saw the back door open and just rampaged in to the greek cypriot HOUSEHOLD ...( if i rember correctly the police call that invasion of privacy let alone break and entre )..all criminal and jailiable offences..the turks just took what was not thiers and all becuase they saw the back door open and walked in like thives  and murderes..and they would have not stoped at ..farmagusta...if it wasnt for the british intrest on the island..which they asked the american fleet to attack with thier F16 at the time.turkey stoped its advance when they saw the fact that the big boys where in the picture. What ever the out come was  it was all criminal ..OPULOUS as we say....(underhanded)...and you talk of PARTIONING? why there was nothign to partion in the first place..its just  your ignorance to acknowledge the damage done by the turks to greek cypriots and pull the wool over the eyes of the rest of the world by saying LETS PARTION IT..you got o be joking..what kind of a world do you live in? why do you think there is so much tension in cyprus?  how would you like me to walk in the back door of your house and becuase you are not there  i partion it and say well  i claimed this mine so its half now mine. all becuse i walked in and took over like a criminal...i dont think you would like it one bit in fact i am sure you would respond with a very very threating manner....re think what you say ..dont dismiss the fact that a crime has been done.by covering it up with words like PARTION..

  14. Yes, I consider Cyprus as Greek. 40% may be under Turkish occupation and 10% under British occupation but still it's a Greek island fighting for freedom.

  15. by the end of the Bronze Age, Mycenaean was the first Greeks who came to Cyprus.

Since then, art, literature and civilization bloomed!!! Greek religion was spread to the island (12 Gods of Olympus). Holy places and temples were build and since then thousands of Greeks died defending the Island.

I'm uploading a picture of a column showing the names of the first Greek soldiers who died fightig 2500 years ago

  16. we,people in cyprus, feel like we are greek.  there are everywere flags of greece and we always celebrate whenever greeks win a football match or something.  Greek history is tough in schools and they also learn ancient greek. Sooo yes we are =]

  17. NAI. Before the war with the turkish a long time ago, the country of Greece was included the cyprus, and part of Turkey to Ankara, after the war they have expanded out and own half of Cyprus, today. But it will always be greek til the end of time.lol!

  18. antℝeas sweetheart you

    are a 100 percent right

    edits and all!!!!  Imagine

      trying to  tell an actual

    Greek Cypriot his business...

Well I blame the lack of

    proper education, manners,

    and a decent environmental hazard

    team for their behavior, and

    I blame the department of

    sanitation in Turkey

    for their existence.

  19. When there is a Greek football match in Cyprus, the Cypriots come out in force waving Greek flags and showing a lot of support, maybe they consider their self as Greeks.

  20. The main problem in Cyprus has been solved more than 30 years ago. Abolishing the already agreed upon constitution one sidedly and attacking Tuırkish Civilians in the island and finally trying to unite the island with Greece led us today's Cyprus.

What we have in hand is 2 seperate by root but kind of similar people in Cyprus. But far more similar people same by root, religion and way of living parted their ways in Europe. Why would we insist to unite this island again if much similar people of Europe are doing otherwise. Want examples? Czechs and Slovaks, who are by religion, by root and by the way of living same people (and their Slavic languages are totally mutually intelligible) parted their countries. Slavic people of Yugoslavia did the same. Tho they fogged it up badly when doing so thanx to Serbs. Now Belgium is expected to be divided. Within 20 years Scotland is going to be independent. Even 2 of Vlach countries Moldova and Romania do not unite. And now we all should agree upon the unification of TRNC and ROC? Gimme a break, will ya?

The caprices of Greeks know no boundaries really. Problem has been solved for everyone's good. If you Greeks really want to unite the island with Greece, unite your own part.

    Pfffst@you

    katalavainete?

Btw Lady S said "in the ideal world they should remove the troops"

Honey, in the ideal world there would be no troops at all, in the ideal world Angelina Jolie would be my wife aaand in the ideal world I'd own an Aston Martin Vantage instead of a boring Porsche Cayman S.

Oh well ok i dont own a Cayman S

It's just a Cayman and not that boring :P

  21. I Kipros einai kipriaki, alla i istoria kai o politismos tis einai ellinika!

Of course, there's only one republic of Cyprus!

The northern part has been illegally occupied by the Turks since 1974.

  22. Which part? The southern part or the northern part?

Edit: Hey! What with the anger? I just asked for a clarification?

And no, I don't consider Cyprus Greek, I consider Cyprus Cypriot. Cyprus has always had a special position and has been under Hellen, Assyrian, Egyptian, Persian, Roman, Arab, Templarian, Venetian and Ottoman rule because of its importance in trade routes. Today, Greek and Turkish Cypriots rule the island, (looking at the reactions) at least in theory.

Edit 2: OK. If you are so aggressive about this, let's divide the island into "Greek" part and "Turkish" part for good, and let them live peacefully within their own boundaries.

It's ridiculous how you refuse equal citizenship as Cypriots and then refuse partition, too.

  23. I would consider it Cypriot. Greek and Turkish Cypriot.

P.S. The fact that you call Turks barbarians and the way ALL Greeks replied to that question about Macedonia show just who you are. When that girl wanted to know something about Macedonia, all Greeks tried to show it as the worst place in the world, even though they have never even been there. That says enough about Greeks.

  24. No one could answer this except the people who live there. What do they consider themselves?

  25. Cyprus is a single sovereign state, member of the EU with strong ties with all the EU members, especially Greece...82% of Cypriots have greek ethnicity while 18% have turkish, though 100% of them have cypriot nationality and citizenship..

So Cyprus is a cypriot island inhabited mainly by Greeks

EDIT: Totally blunt, Cyprus is not a pizza..If we ever want to be divided into parts, we'll arrange it ourselves..you have no say on this

  26. Cyprus is Greek, although there is a bunch of barbarians that live there. But that doesn' t make it lesser Greek.
