Question:

Would you consider a 4 year old's request for pierced ears?

In her words she wants to get her ears "cut" so she can put earrings in the "cuts".

She has figured out it will hurt already by herself, but since "cuts stop being poorly quickly" she still wants to do it.

I hate the idea of doing this to a child so young, but on the other hand it is her request - not mine, and since she is a girl she'll almost certainly get them sooner or later, so I just can't decide if there is any reason to make her wait.

  1. I don't see a problem in it. My 2 y/o has her ears pierced.

  2. At almost 4 I requested to have mine done also. My mom had never prompted me, I saw someone else with them and wanted them too.

I also knew it would hurt but insisted, so my mother took me. I remember having it done also. They did both ears at once, and I was done. I didn't even get upset because I was so proud of them.

I will probably do the same with my girls, when they want it done they can.

  3. well I dont know I mean she is very young but my ears were pierced when i was young and so was my sisters.

  4. No - and the most basic reason is that she can't look after the hygiene. Wait til she's 10.

  5. my daughter asked when she was 3.5 and we did it immediatly (we were at a jewelry counter just looking at stuff when she asked)

it's been 8 weeks now and we've changed her earrings and she hasnt been a problem the entire time

  6. My aunt has children and has gotten all of their ears pierced (She has three girls) and I'd see no problem with that! YOU are the one who needs to be sure about it, though, if you aren't sure, then just say no until she's a little older. :) But you can help her take care of her ears once they're pierced, so it's good to see you're looking out for her. :)

  7. No I wouldn't consider it...I wouldn't consider it until the child was old enough to PROVE that she could understand the instructions and follow through with the cleaning and taking care of the piercings herself.

  8. It's up to you. If you think that it's time then go ahead. It's alright. My 3 yr old brother has his ear pierced.

  9. of course. i had my ears pierced when i was around 2. i don't understand why parents think their children need to be old to have their ears pierced. its really not a big deal at all! why do some parents make it out to be?

let your daughter get her ears pierced... its not like getting a tattoo or something. like i said, its just an ear piercing! i don't understand the problem here. plus, your daughter sounds very mature.

  10. If you are ready to clean the ears 1-2 a day and teach her how to turn the earring regularly so that they heal properly, then I don't see anything wrong with it. It's a personal decision, just remember that ears can get infected if not properly treated and as she is 4 you will be the one cleaning them always-- she is too young to remember.

Another option would be to tell her she can have it done when she turns 7-- that will be an excting thing for her when she is a little older and more reliable for the cleaning-- though you will certainly still have to make sure she is taking care of them.

  11. Sure. If you can find a place that will do both ears at the same time, that really helps. You will have to clean them for her until she can . And the earrings can not come out. There's a but. If she plays soccer you need to wait. If you have to take the earrings out too early so that she can play, it's gonna hurt.

  12. It's absolutely silly to pierce a child's ears. Don't turn your girls out to be fashion queens as such a young age. I suppose you have them wearing heals too so they can't run and play like kids should do.

Maybe I should take my 5 y/o son down to get a tattoo...same thing!
