I am setter for my team, and I do really well. Wondering what your opinion is of the setter. I love it!

  1. The setter is like the quarterback of the team but gets the least recognition and I'm saying that as a non-setter. They control the tempo of the game, plays being made as in deciding the right time to do a certain play, and are overall the brains of the team. Honestly the setter, passer, and hitter all coincide with skills. Even if you get good passes, the setter has to know when the right time comes to run a play or when to dunk the ball over the net efficiently to score points. They must read the court so well so they know how they should place the ball in the air, like more in the middle so the hitter can hit it to the right or left open space, more to the outside so the hitter can attack to a corner, etc. Without a good setter, the hitters can't hit and then not many points can be scored easily. In the case of good passes and good sets though and the hitter doesn't do their job, it's easy to see that the setter set an excellent ball and that hitter isn't follwoing through. Setters don't get much glory because hitters make the biggest bang but they absolutely can if they play aggressively. If the ball is tight on the net, they have the option of surprising the other team and slamming it down or dunking it or tipping it. They also must put that ball where it needs to be with total confidence that they did it right and that hitter is going to put the ball away. The setter must also be confident that they can do harder techniques like back sets, ones, plays like a slide or a tandem, etc and not have any fears of messing up. The setter is the powerhouse of the team. They usually are supposed to see the entire floor and what's happening on both sides. They really do run the game. They are the deciding point between whether your team plays their game of volleyball at the tempo they wish or if your team plays the other team's game at their pace and can't keep up. It's the setter's job to carry the team and bring them to new levels and control what happens on that floor, not letting points be made on them. I think very highly of the setter because my team has not had the greatest ones in about 2 years and after seeing what a real setter is supposed to do, you really appreciate them. It's a hard job to do so I respect those in that position. Also, how I said setters don't get the glory: People in the stands watching volleyball games may not get the full concept of how you can run plays or what the setter is doing and so even though the setter is outrageously good but a certain hitter stinks, it makes everyone look bad. There are exceptions though. I've seen setters be everywhere at once. They get all over the floor sending a perfect, non-spinning ball to the absolute perfect position on the net for the hitter to kill it. After seeing the set I don't even care about what the hit does because as a player, we know what to look for and if you're good, you will absolutely get recognition from anyone who knows anything about what a setter is supposed to look like and be doing. Good luck with your position :]

  2. yes and no...the setter cant do much unless you get a pass to them so yeah...if u have a really good hitter...a setter's not gonna matter much cuz the hitter can hit anything...but ur defintely important

  3. A good setter is the soul of the team.

I don't think any one on a "team" needs to be called "the best", as every single position is equally imporatant for the team to win games.

  4. I would just say important.  Not most important.

If you do not have any passers on the team, the best setter in the world will not be any good.  The setter will never touch the ball and will not be important at all.

If you have great passers and a poor setter, the result will be the same.  No sets for the hitters.

I played for a team that had terrible passers.  We ran a 6-2 with me being one of the setters.  I touched more passes with my hands when I was in the front row.  It seemed like I would rotate all the way across the back row without touching the ball.  (How important was I on that team?)
