Question:

Would you consider this an event in 3rd wave feminism?

I remember last September a 22 year old girl was thrown off a plane because of what she was wearing.

“He told me, ‘I’m sorry, but you’re going to have to take a later flight. You’re dressed inappropriately. This is a family airline. You’re dressed too provocative to fly on this flight,’ ” she told Lauer.

You can find the article if you look on MSBC, but-- would it be considered a feministic event?

  1. If you dress like a cheap " Working Girl " of the street corner variety then you get what you got because that is what you advertised.

  2. Doesn't sound particularly feminist at first glance-but I guess it would be if they refuse to throw guys off who dress provocatively-but is there a way for a guy to dress provocatively? So maybe it was sexist if there's no similar reason to throw a guy off a plane. If he took his shirt off and wore tight short short pants would that do it? Or would he have to wear high heels? Have holes in his pants in the "wrong" spots?

Good point-would a guy have to dress "like a woman" to be considered a provocative dresser? In that case, it is sexist-if there's no way for a man to dress inappropriately and freak out the "families". It could be considered 2nd or third wave-but you're right, it could be sexist.

But as you've noticed, provocative dressing women who are treated in a sexist manner aren't especially a rallying point for feminists. It's not that the woman deserved to be mistreated, but common sense would tell you that it's not a great idea to dress in a socially unacceptable way in a public cramped space. I wouldn't be too keen about being around a half dressed guy on a plane either-especially if I had to sit near him. But would I want him thrown off the plane? Probably not. Nor would I care if a woman was half dressed on a plane who was near me. But I"m not a prude either.

  3. It doesn't have much to do with feminism. But I think it's ridiculous to throw someone off a plane because their skirt is too short.

  4. Not really. It's kind of humorous, though, even though they probably had no legal grounds for throwing her off unless she was exposing some private bits. But I wouldn't call it feministic.

  5. Not as far as I can see. Why would a feminist want to throw her off?
