Question:

Would you consider this being into MMA?

Im very dedicated in internal/external shaolin kung fu, san shou, shuai jiao, and have cross-trained with two friends on many occassions. One is in Kyokushin/goju-ryu karate and the other is into muay thai/bjj. Ive competed and won in full-contact, yet when I talk to some people who attend MMA schools, they say "unless your training boxing, muay thai, or bjj, its not really mma." I thought "mixed" meant more than one style. Has anyone else ever been in this conversation with someone before?

  1. Mixed means MIXED anyone who tells you different is a fool.

While boxing, wrestling, muay thai, and bjj are all part of the foundation you also have fighters that are world class Judokas with Olympic medals.

Loyoto Machida is fundamentally a karate fighter while GSP has his base from kyokushin and Chuck Liddell got his start with Hawaiian kempo.

Heck in Japan you'll find fighters who use Pro Wrestling as a foundation.

  2. look at machida, he trains mostly in karate. you can bring any style to mma and if it works, who cares what they say.

  3. mixed ma is just a word , it dont mean alot

dana came up with the word because

the commision wouldnt like no holds barred or

cage fighting , so get with the program

if u step into the octagon bring your spirit , your energy

and fight , no more stupid questions.

  4. i think it is, the people who say that arent knowlegable in mma obviously.  mma is MIXED martial arts, and i consider the training you do to be mma.  most people think striking (kickboxing, boxing), muay thai and bjj to be mma cuz that is what a lot of fighters these days do

  5. There is a lot of hatred of various different martial arts within the MMA community. The same people who knock the karate and kung fu that you practice would have no objection to you taking out a terrorist with what you know, if you were on a plane, a train, or a bus and some nut job started making trouble. You have a pretty good idea of what you're capable of with the skills and the 'martial' mindset that you have. You are one of the sheep dogs protecting the herd of humanity from the wolves of the world.
