Ok I was at my cousins house (She raises Boxers) and she had a lady to come look at her pups. This lady was very strange, she couldn't speak right and kept tripping over herself. Anyway she wanted to buy a puppy so my cousin asked the usual questions like where are you living, how many kids to you have, are you interested in breeding, (She doesn't sell to people who want a puppy to breed with) why have you chosen a boxer dog etc..etc..

Well she replied that she was moving to an army base that only allowed two dog, she had a yorkie and a lab, and she kept rambling about shedding and not knowing if she wanted to deal with potty training, crate training, etc. And she also had a 5 year old son. Well after a few hints of "I'm not selling you a pup" she started to go on and on about how she has depression and she needed this puppy to keep her sane. I thought she was crazy and so did my cousin because finally she had to tell her to go home and talk to her husband about because he didn't know she had even come look at the puppies. I don't know, she just seemed like maybe she was a beginning animal collector you know you just get those vibes????

What do you guys think?

Oh and my cousin didn't sell her a dog just in case you were wondering.

  1. I understand what your saying; too many dogs in too short of a time.  I've known some of these types of people and I don't know if I would call them "hoarders".  I'm no expert and I've never heard of a term for the types, but there seems to be some people who could fall into a group that likes to "acquire" pets and then discard them in a short time (usually under 2 years) for a newer model and the cycle continues.

Like I said, I've never heard of an official name given to these sorts, but they're definitely out there.

Glad your cousin asked questions & didn't sell her one of her pups.

  2. Oprah had a show on people's instincts last week, always trust your instincts! Who cares what she wanted the dog for,at least she's not getting one of the puppies!

  3. Good for your cousins the poor women sounded disabled...

  4. Does she still have the yorkie and lab?  Or she got rid of them because of shedding and housebreaking issues?

Horders ussually just keep more dogs than what they can physically and financially care for.

Not sure if she's a hoarder.. but she's definantly not sane!  Sounds like someone who may buy pups based on "cuteness" then dumps them when she's tired of them peeing everywhere.

Most collectors actually DO suffer from mental disorders..  its not just about rescuing and getting overwhelmed.  Often times there are similar things seen among hoarders.. such as poor housekeeping.. they often have "collections" of other inanimate things that clutter the home.  Many of them also wont admit that they are overwhelmed (A "sane" person would realize they are overwhelmed and try to seek help, while a hoarder thinks that there is no better home!)

  5. Just because a person wants a third dog does not make them a hoarder. I applaud your cousin for not selling this lady a dog though, simply because she (the "crazy" lady) obviously didnt want to deal with the responsibilities of raising a dog. I dont believe she was a hoarder, just a lonely lady looking for something to fill the void. She should grow a chia pet!

  6. Animal collectors aren't often nuts like a crazy cat lady.  Actually, a lot of them are just people trying to rescue and get overwhelmed, don't know when to stop themselves (had to stop myself form that once or twice too).

She sounded to me like she just needs some serious help or fell off her medication for the day.  You never know, and it doesn't seem fair to pass judgement on someone like that until you know the entire situation.
