  1. I've always thought of a responsibility as a pre-determined thing, like... You're responsible for taking care of a pet, or for going to work every day.

Accountability is where you're held liable for something - you do something wrong, or don't do something right, and you have to face up to the outcome of whatever you did (or didn't) do.

That's how I've always seen it, anyway. :)

It seems the link below agrees:

RESPONSIBLE implies holding a specific office, duty, or trust

ACCOUNTABLE suggests imminence of retribution for unfulfilled trust or violated obligation

  2. To me, responsibility is something you have in order to make things happen a certain way.    For example, I am responsible for all student reports.  I must be accountable for that.  Accountability is what you have once you have made a decision and there is an outcome of some sort.  It can be good or bad, but you are the one responsible for that outcome.  If the reports are done incorrectly, I have to be accountable.  It is up to me to correct the situation.

  3. responsibility ...is your duty to make sure this is

    kept to the standard required

accountability.... is to understand that you alone

should forefill or ensure it is done , ie  you take the blame

if its not done.. be accountable for actions, do it yourself
