Question:

Would you eat guinea pigs?

Today, on the main page on Yahoo, I saw a headline for an article about a guinea pig festival in Peru. I read the article and saw the accompanying photos. The purpose of the festival is to dress up live guinea pigs in costumes, and to eat dead guinea pigs. The guinea pigs are not kept as pets, but are served as food.

I would never eat guinea pigs. I keep guinea pigs as pets, and I think it's kind of gross to eat guinea pigs. Perhaps that's a cultural thing, though.

Has anyone actually eaten guinea pigs? If you haven't, would you?

  1. I did in South America. I was at a dinner on a very large hacienda...did not want to be rude. BBQ is BBQ I soon discovered. They all raise them, often under the houses to eat their scrap lettuce and stuff.

They are cute but as the sign said in the movie "pets or food?" at the rabbit farm...

  4. I would definitely try it.

  6. try it . discover a new thing.culinary is endless. You will miss a very good meat.

  7. as long it wasn't squeaking at me....

I've eaten both rabbit and squirrel, and both are delicious. I'd imagine guinea pig would be a lot like rabbit.

Cows are cute too before they go on the plate. Some even have names, yet we eat those remorselessly in America, and they're not even as good for us as smaller critters like guinea pigs.

Some towns in America have festivals centered around celebrating a food source that is an important part of the economy of the area. I used to love going to the local Broiler Festival growing up, where it was chicken, chicken, chicken.  To each place its food source.

  8. I wouldn't eat one. Have you ever held them? It's like holding a furry bag of jelly. They don't have hard toned muscle like cats, rabbits. Based on that alone I wouldn't eat them (not that I would eat a rabbit or cat).

  9. cuy! cuy! cuy! Yes, they're great.
