a book, or a movie, or TV?

perhaps a favorite character from a novel that you love, or a classic movie that you've always liked, or a TV show that you are a great fan of.

*IF* you were to choose a name from any of these what would they be?

  1. Yes Yes Yes i have thought of using a name for one of those...

    TV:

    Lorlei

    Rori

    Book:

    Luke

    Movie:

    Micheal

I have some more but at the moment i cant think right!

    Good Luck!

  2. Yeah, Twilight. And I acually came up with some very pretty names...

    Leah Victoria

    Isabella Renee

    Jessica Claire

    Heidi Jane

    Emmett James

    Samuel Tyler

    Jacob Anthony

    Benjamin Edward

First and middle names are from the characters in the books

  3. I would if the name would not be obviously linked to the character. I would love to use Scarlette or Gweneviere but Gone with the Wind & King Arthur immediately come up.

  4. I would definitely do this.

    Charlotte:  Charlotte's Web

Owen: A Prayer For Owen Meany (used on my cat, though)

    Holden: Catcher In The Rye

Amelie:  From the movie of the same name

  5. As long as it isn't something very trendy right now. Like Mylee or Jonas or Vivienne and Knox. That would look like you were naming your child directly after a star or charactor. I would use names that I got off of a show that were already names.

    Huck-like Huckleberry Finn

    Lena-Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants

    Briony-Atonement

    Francesca-Bridges of Madison County

I'm not naming my kid after these charactors, just heard the name on the movies or books

  6. Yes, especially if it was meaningful.

i am considering using the name Allie (allison) from the notebook. not only was it one of my favorite books, and movies, rachel McAdams is my favorite actress, and it really touched me.

  7. I love the name Eva, as in Eva Longoria-Parker, but I don't think I would name my child that in honor of the media that I got it from, but only if I really like the name.

  8. I wouldn't, but if I were to, her name would be Lorelai Rachel after Lorelai and Rory on "Gilmore Girls" and Rachel on "Friends".  I'd call her Lily or Laura.

    :)

  9. i definitely would - only from a very classic movie or a classic novel though. i dont know what they would be

  10. I think I'd go with Miles or Tuck from Tuck Everlasting.

My brother gave his little boy the middle name Lestat.

  11. I'm not too sure, but I'd pick the name from literature since I'm a big fan of literature. My favorite literature name is Nausicaa for a girl from the Odyssey by Homer. And my fav. boy name is Siren (I know it's not a real literature name but the Sirens were in Greek mythology, which is literature as well)

  12. My favorite TV show is Charmed, and I got two of my favorite names from it... Paige and Cole! It wouldn't necessarily be me naming my children after the show, I just love the names!

However, my ex-boyfriend's sister named her son Atticus, after Atticus Finch in To Kill A Mockingbird.

  13. I would if I really loved the name of the character.

I haven't found the character yet...

  14. I would use a name that I had heard of from a book, movie or television if I liked it.  I would not use it just because it was from a favorite book, movie or television though.

I heard the name Gladys recently, while watching a movie called Inn of the Sixth Happiness.  It is a movie based on a true story about a missionary named  Gladys Aylward.  The name appealed to me for a variety of reasons.

  15. I would definitely use a name from a favorite character in movies, tv or books.  People have been doing this for thousands of years.  Bible names are a great example of the trend.

Personally, my husband and I are trying to find names that have a combination of things, one of which is a favorable connotation. Obviously since we've grown up in the last thirty years, television, movies, and books are a big part of how we learned to think about things.  There's no shame in that.  The naming experts say that we as a culture will be naming our children after video games in the next fifty years...while I think that's a little nuts, I see why it'll happen!

Point is, if you like the name, whether it be because of someone you actually knew and loved, or someone you formed a parasocial bond with on screen or in a novel, go for it!

If you're looking for specific examples of this, try googling baby names and literature, baby names and television, etc. There's some awesome lists out there.

As far as if I were to choose specific names for examples...hrm. Well, my best friend plans to name her son Holden after Salinger's Catcher in the Rye protagonist.

Another example: I was just today researching the name Kilmeny, after rereading a book of the same name.  I'm not in love with it yet, but I do like it after reading about a character I admire with the same name.

  16. Sansa from "A Song of Fire and Ice" (mainly just like it, not really considering it)

Maybe characters from a Jane Austen book, but I like those types of names a lot anyway. (I.E. Elizabeth, Lydia...)

I'm also considering Sofie Lorraine after Sophia Loren

  17. Well i was watching this movie on lifetime once and there was a giirl in it named izaiylea and i fell in love with the name. im deff gonna name my daughter that wehn i have onee. :)

  18. When I get older I am planning on naming my son after a character in a book(turned movie). I won't say what it is though, I don't want it becoming over-popular, so I'm not taking any chances.

  19. I like Cordelia from Shakespeare's KING LEAR.

  20. I have just had a baby girl on the 15th, and am still having trouble deciding on a name. I am a huge fan of Futarama, and since this year they are making a heap of new DVDs, I was seriously considering using the name Leela!... but then I considered it...

Although the character is feisty, strong and supposed to be considerably attractive (despite the one eye) she is also a mutant and can sometimes have a bit of an attitude problem. I thought my daughter may take offense to this when she was older.

I think there is just too many problems to think about when naming your child after a character from a book, movie or TV. This is because a lot of characters have so many dimensions to them, and while some people will think of the character for their good points, others will keep them in mind for their bad points. With a neutral kind of character, like the one I chose myself, you cannot be sure if people will understand the use of the name.

  21. definitely.

that's where i come up with most names i would like to use.

my friend and i love FRIENDS and shes always wanted to name her son Chandler :)

i also love to read and in a book i am reading there is an edward and its getting me to like that name much better.

its a great way to come up with many different name ideas.
