In working abroad, I'm not looking for an experience that's focused on making me feel good. I am looking for an experience where local people are telling me what they need, are directing me in providing that need, and are learning from me so that, when I leave, they can do it themselves. Communities want less aid and more *parnterships* and *empowerment*.

Yes, definitely.  It could be a very rewarding and enlightening experience.  It's good to get outside your country, it makes you appreciate what we have here so much more.
