Can you retire from the Army Reserves and if so do you get a DD214 or a certificate of service?

  1. You should get one from release of any duty, it also should show your history of duty stations,awards, and time of service, etc. I have been asked for mine by the VA Hospital to get benefits, but im retired reserve and recall only getting my retirement letter.

No.  Unless you are ordered to active duty for training in which an MOS (Military Occupational Skill) Identifier is awarded for completing such training (normally for a period of 90 days or more).  Other periods of active duty for training, active duty special work, mobilization etc. are other ways to receive a DD Form 214 while a member of the reserves or National Guard.  Members retiring from the Reserves/National Guard after completion of 20 "satisfactory" years receive a 20 year letter; subsequently entitlement for retired pay at age 60.  However, all service members (Active or Reserve) completing basic training and advance individual training (after basic) do receive their initial DD Form 214.  Hope this has clarified the issue.
