HISTORY

Im 19 and live at home. I have been working since 16 and bought all my own things and what not.I do not pay rent but clean up after myself and never ask for anything. my parents do not have good jobs, even though i keep telling them to get something better so they wont struggle so much but nothing. my dad finally started working this year after a year of recieving (i forgot what those check from the gov't are called when you dont work or are layed off). my moms not doing well in hers either. so yeah, im doing okay, am paying a car and braces plus credit cards and all that junk college people do.

QUESTION

so anyway my dad asked me for gas money or said for me to take him to and from work. so i said i dont want to drive a half hour at 5 am so i would write him a check for like $10(he said). then he said no and for me to just go and take him to put gas and use my card. i dont want to go so i said i'll give him my card to use. he said he'll just fill it up (he has a giant van). So i was like woah woah... i trust you will only do 10 or 15 though. He said, yeah but I dont trust myself. so i was like fine then i dont trust you anymore and walked away.

wt heck is that? should I still let him? I really dont want to go with him or do anything out of my way. btw we barely speak and are not close at all.

  1. So lets get this straight:

Your parents are struggling financially.  You are an adult, you have a decent job and you live in your parents house but don't pay rent (or apparently give them any money for providing food on the table, roof over your head, heat, etc), and you are offended that your Dad asked you to give him a ride to work or give him some gas money?

I think that filling up your Dad's gas tank is a small compensation for them providing you a place to live rent free.  Quite a bargain in fact compared to what you could be paying in rent and utilities somewhere else.

Give him enough cash to fill his tank, and do it on a regular basis.  Its only fair as reimbursement for what they do for you.
