Last night starting at 245am our storm alarm started going off of every 15 minutes. We were under a severe Thunderstorm warning. So my 6 year old woke up screaming and then refused to go back to sleep, even with me, until it was all over at 730am. So I called her out of summer school for the day. Here summer school is really a fun summer school, they play, paint and read books all day. So I didn't feel to bad. But now I do feel bad. When I called the school I just told them she wasn't feeling well and wouldn't be in.

Would you have made her go or would you have kept her home.

  1. I would have had her stay home. Kids don't perform as well when they don't get enough sleep.

Relax, you did the right thing. Summer school will still be there tomorrow.

  2. You did the right thing because children depend on there sleep.

  3. If she was up from 2:45 to 7:30, I'm betting she didn't feel like going to school. Even if she was ok this morning, she wouldn't have made it through the day. I think you made the right decision.

  4. Nothing wrong with it. I would of kept her home with no sleep. Those same storms kept me up all night and I am severely wishing I was home sleeping right now.Better have stay home and rest other than a call from the school telling you your child is passed out.

  5. I would have done the same. It's not like she was up all night playing, she was terrified. She need to rest and recover. That way she can have fun tomorrow. As for telling the school she didn't feel well, it's true, she was scared, tired and upset.

  6. I would have kept her home.  I am sure she would have been miserable going to school with no sleep.  My son has night terrors and won't go back to sleep. There have been a couple times this year that I have had to keep him home because he was up all night.

  7. Kept her home.  Kids need a little reassurance and missing one day isnt going to hurt anything.  Hope she is okay, my son was really freaked out last night too.  He is 7 and we had a tornado watch here.  It took him a long time to fall asleep.

  8. I think children should always attend school unless they have a fever of 101.5 or more or have extenuating circumstance that makes them not able to function properly in school.  If she did not get enough sleep to function properly and safely in school, then you did the right thing.

  9. If she had had no sleep then she would be tired and cranky all day at school anyway.  I have done this with my kids and if they wake up early enough and want to go ahead and go then I take them in if not they get the day to rest.  Just make sure your daughter knows why you did it and explain that it is not something she can do whenever she doesnt want to go but only under certain circumstances like the storm thing.

  10. I would have done the same and kept her home for the day she probably needed to rest and you can always have her do some of the things she would be doing in summer school and she will be more rested for tomeorrow

  11. It wouldn't have been fun, if she slept through her summer school... Let her rest, today, and kick the guilt to the curb!!

  12. I would have done the same, too.  Probably would have even done the same for 'real' school.   It's hard to operate on very little sleep - emotions run high & feelings are easily hurt.

  13. I would of done the same thing, there's no point sending her to school tired.

  14. usually if they need sleep i let them...then take them in late

  15. Kept her home. She needs sleep-she would have been miserable and in turn caused problems for other children and teachers.

  16. I would have kept her home. She needs the rest. And she probably wasn't feeling well after not sleeping last night.

  17. I have two girls myself.  If she is a bit of a brat, I would have made her go, however, if she was really scared then maybe she was too tired to go.  I tend to make my daughters aware that they can't have a "fit" and get what they want.  6 year olds are very good at manipulating mom!
