Question:

Would you have favored Tex Cobb over Tommy Morrison in light of the way Tex wore down Shavers with his "Face"?

In many ways Earnie Shavers and Tommy Morrison were the same guy except Morrison had MUCH more speed and went down MUCH more easily. Shavers used his Right and Morrison used his Left. But in the end you have a similiar Entity. { A Killing Machine that LACKS EXCELLENT CONDITIONING!} Tex Cobb wore down Shavers with ONLY his Marble Chin and Cowboy Toughness.

Would Tex have done the same thing to Tommy Morrison OR Would the Explosive Speed of Tommy's Hooks cause Tex to get hit too much and prompt the referee to stop the bout?

  1. it is possible that the pre-mercer morrison might have punched himself out on cobb, like he did against merciless ray, but that aside, tommy would have been the favourite, and a much more rounded boxer than cobb (although cobb made a better actor!), so morrison by decision or late tko.

    Terry Marsh

    Rocky Marciano

    Ricardo Lopez

Sven Ottke (who may be making a comeback)

  2. I believe that Morrison was a much better fighter than Cobb.  He had a lot more speed, better punching power, and pure boxing skills.  Cobb has obviously the better chin and stamina, though Morrison was able to go the distance with big George Foreman earning the decision.  I believe that Morrison would have hit Cobb nearly as often as he wanted t and if he paced himself, would win by technical knockout if and when the referee got tired of seeing Cobb getting hit too much.  Morrison by 10th round tko.

  3. white fighters again?here is one.....3 fighters all whiteshite ...retired with their world title belts having never lost a pro fight,...who were they.

  4. Which Tommy Morrison are we talking about?  The one who went balls to the wall and burned himself out against Ray Mercer?  Or the more-patient boxer/puncher who fought a smarter fight (and ran a little bit) against George Foreman.

Either way, Tommy would have a chance.  I don't think he could drop Cobb. But with his speed and explosive power, he certainly could have inflicted several cuts, leaving Cobb bloody and swollen and prompting a doctor's stoppage.  But if he wasn't relaxed in there and burnt himself out again, I could see Cobb steadily applying pressure and outlasting a fatigued Morrison in about 9 rounds.

The more patient Morrison would have a better chance.  He could box, use his speed, step in with a few bombs, and then go back to the outside, keeping Cobb off-balance and frustrated.  Morrison had a label of a glass chin.  It is not as bad as it was made out to be.  It was certainly better than Bruce Seldon's or Floyd Patterson's.  His stoppage against Mercer was more to fatigue.  Car Williams caught him with a few good shots and hurt him, flooring him twice, but he came back.  Against Michael Bentt, he just walked into a punch.  It could happen to anybody.  He didn't see it coming and got blindsided.  And against Lennox Lewis, he just took and extraordinary amount of punishment.

Tommy wasn't a bad fighter.  He was a fringe contender that had he focused more earlier in his career, he may have had more success.
