Question:

Would you hire me as a wedding singer?

I do not have experience as a wedding singer - but I have a bachelor of music in opera and classical singing with some stage experience. I am heading back to uni to do a graduate diploma in opera studies and am hoping to get some work in singing to help pay my fees!

Would you hire me as a wedding singer? Why and why not?

Thanks in advance.

P.S. Where would you look for a wedding singer - ie, online, newspaper, etc.

  1. If you sent me a demo tape or I could view your work on a website and I liked it I would.

  2. If I was looking for a wedding singer, I'd be searching the phone book. I agree with the first poster when she says thats its not all about talent. (I'm sure you already knew that) Personally, I wouldn't hire you but thats only because I want a DJ.

  3. A wedding singer needs to have more than just singing talent.  The main part is to be able to hold an audience.  If  I met you and knew you could express a lively personality onstage, I'd hire you.

If you're only claim to fame is your opera and classical background, I'm assume you were not down-to-earth enough to do a wedding.

When you sell yourself, focus on how much fun you are.  If you really aren't that person, wedding singing probably isn't a good match for your talents.

  4. I think to really get business/gigs you need a band/musicians.  We are hiring a jazz band for our wedding reception and want a vocalists, but we just hired a band that had a vocalist.

People would never go through the trouble of hiring both separately, and it would be weird to book a band and then throw them a vocalist they've never met to sing with them all night.

The same if you want to do ceremonies.  My fiance plays piano for weddings sometimes, but it's arranged through a guitarist and vocalist he has played with at church for years.  People ask to hire them and then they can offer both instruments (or just one) and their vocalist.

We didn't have to look for a band since my fiance plays jazz piano and had many jazz band contacts to book ours (he just called his old saxophonist and asked him to arrange a 5 piece from musicians he's worked with for our budget).  If I were looking I would check craigslist first, that's where I looked for a photographer.

    Good Luck!
