If they promised you your dream job when you came back? You would get a 5 year contract @ $200K a year, guaranteed.

  1. I wanted to join the Peace Corps even without the promise of my dream job.  The Peace Corps was my dream job!  But instead I went and got pregnant, so I'll have to put my dream of the Peace Corps on hold until my baby is grown up and out of the house.

  2. Definitely!

  3. Sounds too good to be true!

  4. No, never. Peace Corps are no dream organization and conflicts they're involved in 'wherever in the world' are complex and need a lot of understanding. Sometimes not even all the participants haven't got a clue about who's who and what's going on, let alone the paid foreign corps. They haven't convinced anyone that their interest is humanitarian or genuine. Or that they've done an in-depth research on the matter. It takes two to start a conflict and taking sides can be tricky. A lot of these people are only motivated by the money and the benefits that come along with it, and in reality they cannot read a map of the terrain, or they hold it upside down at best.

If I were to consider a similar option, I'd have to be very rich and capable of following my ideals. Then I'd join the Peace Corps out of pure conviction and the ideals that I hold sacred and justified.

When you can't afford that, the only honourable option is to work hard for your career, not wait for it to be promised and given to you in exchange for your (controversial, to say the least) merits.

  5. I joined 35 years ago and served for two years. When I came back I got a job at $7,000 a year. With one exception, a lawyer, none of the people in my group make 200K/year today.
