Question:

Would you let somebody working in your house smoke inside?

I'm an apprentice electrician and do work in houses sometimes. When I have a break I ask if I can smoke and go outside if I can't. There was nobody there and it was lashing rain so I opened the window and had my smoke. A few minutes later the owner came back and lashed me out for smoking and complained to my boss. I felt bad about it but didn't think one cigarette could upset someone so much

  1. No you can't smoke inside someones house without their permission, even out of the window,  do you realise that non-smokers will still be able to smell the smoke very easily?  I'm actually allergic to cigarette smoke, I would have been furious if someone had done this in my home.

  2. You should always respect other people's homes.  Most people don't smoke in their home anymore because everyone knows someone that is a non-smoker and who would be offended.

Besides, most of us have children that can't be breathing it either, or the fact that trying to clean the tar off the walls and appliances is just awful.

I am a smoker, I do not smoke in my home, and I know of only one smoker that smokes in their home within the circle of smoking friends.  Next time, huddle under the porch, or if its really bad, go sit in your car and light up.  As for the company, apologize, kiss some butt, and explain that you'll never make such an assumption again.  If someone I knew lit up in my house,  it wouldn't be a big deal, I'd ask them to stop.  If someone I was paying did that I'd be pretty pissed off, because it's disrespectful to me and my home.

  3. personally i wouldn't because i am a none smoker but if the person was a smoker then i don't think they would have a problem, though you should always ask because it is up to the owner because you don't want to upset there views

  4. No chance - I despise the smell of cigarette smoke, and have made the choice to not smoke and not allow any guests to smoke in my house.

It was out of order for you to smoke in someones house without their approval - I hope you have learnt your lesson.

You may not notice the lingering smell of smoke (even when you are leaning out the window), but I can assure you that a non smoker will definately smell it when they come back home....I wouldn't hesitate to complain about someone I have employed who smoked in my home without my consent.

  5. That was rude, their loved one could have died of cancer or a smoking disease, but it could have been worse, you could have left something floating down the pan...lol, He got off lightly...

  6. No never smoke in someone Else's house without their permission.  Like lots of people  non smokers feel it it is a nasty foul habit, and dislike intensely the smell,  As a smoker you will not notice it so much...   It is now becoming socially unacceptable to smoke   So give it up if you can   ,  Not good for you, premature death and all that,  But people won't to  know you ,   Save lots of money too

  7. Oh definitely not! I would do more than complain to the boss, I can tell you! It's like walking through heavy soggy mud, then dreading it all through the house. Bad manners, disrespectful and ignorant. It's against the law to smoke in the workplace (if it's indoors) anway, so you should be used to having to go outside. It probably sounds like I'm overexagerating but I'm not. They could take you to court and win easy, if they were that petty.

  8. What you did was wrong on several levels.

    1. You set fire to a substance within someones home.

    2. You did not ask permission to do this.

    3. You jeopardised the property by igniting substances within it.

    4. You may have voided the insurance by undertaking an activity        prohibited in the terms of insurance.

    5. You have allowed an addiction to affect your performance and worse still your reputation.

  9. Only a smoker would be okay with that. You just don't smoke in someone's house when you're working there unless you've asked for and received their permission. Us smokers often don't realize it but the smell of cigarette smoke is quite noticeable to non-smokers, even hours later or the next day, and there are people with allergies who simply can't have it in the house. Even if you do it outdoors, try to pick a place where the smoke won't end up back in the house. When I work at places where they don't smoke, I do it well away from the house if at all.

  10. no, I don't smoke and don't like anyone smoking in my house, it leaves a bad smell, I do let my ma smoke though by the back door.

  11. no one smokes in my home!! It it a filthy habit you should give up before it kills you! Out of concern for the customers desires you should NEVER smoke in anyone's home or business.

  12. No, i wouldn't. Only because i'm not allowed to smoke in my own home. Anyway, it's illegal to smoke in your workplace and your boss could get a huge fine.

  13. I don't think you realise how much smoke smells.  If someone smokes on my back doorstep with the door open, I can smell it in the upstairs room at the front.

Even if you smoke with a window open, the smell hangs around for a couple of weeks.

I guess you know now - get an umbrella and you can enjoy your f**s without upsetting anyone.

  14. To non smokers it's the end of the world. Here in ca. they can tolerate earthquakes, mudslides, but when someone lights a cigarette, you think someone was committing murder.

To answer your question. I would have no problem with it. My husband doesn't smoke, but I do. He doesn't care if people smoke in the house. I do, his mom, brother, and my sister all do. Among others. He's not like all the other whiny non smokers. I married a good one.

  15. No, I WOULD NOT!

And, yes, one cigarette does offend non smokers, especially if you smoked it in their house, windows open or not!.

Quite apart from the offencive smell, it could have invalidated their insurance if they declared that they do not smoke.

  16. I personally am a 37 year experienced painter and have smoked most of my life..I would not smoke in clients houses even if they smoked or told me it was fine to smoke...For 1 the respect of a non smokers house, they can smell the the residue a mile away..there may also be someone with breathing/asthmatic conditions within the househhold..I have also seen a client try to claim against my insurance a carpet burn that was already there before we came(quite a noticeble one)..trying to get a free carpet job...Even if they suggest it is okay..I refuse to do so on ANY job..even though i am retired now..That was my policy

  17. Did you ever think that the people who live there might have asthma or bronchitis and that even though you had a window open the smoke still lingers ? This could have a life threatening effect on some people . Please be a responsable smoker .

  18. That is so bad i would go sick at someone for it. when my family come down they stand outside whatever the weather...Get yourself an umberella. How do you know that someone in that house isnt alergic to tobacco smoke or has astma? That is just sooo rude you really should think. Why dont you try giving up then it wont be a problem in future.

  19. You shouldn't smoke in someone else's house without their permission.

Its just blatant bad manners sorry!

  20. Smoking in someone's home, especially one that don't smoke, is an invasion. No matter if you opened the window or not, you can still smell the smoke.  You disrespected your customer by smoking in their home and I'm not surprised that they called the boss.

I used to smoke and when my mom comes to visit, she always goes outside. If it's raining, she'll sit in the vehicle. She knows I don't like the smell of it in my house and she respects that.

Next time you feel the urge, step into the truck, car, whatever, just don't light up in your customers house. Afterall, you were hired to perform a task, not pollute their air.

    Good luck

  21. definitely not, especially if there are kids about, this is complete and utter ignorance, with no thought for you or your house.

  22. I wouldn't allow you to smoke in my house and if you cant go for a few hours without a f*g then you are an addict and need to seek professional help.

Smoking is dangerous for your health and others around you and just think that the people who own the house might have an allergy than smoking will aggravate.

  23. Hi there, I am a non-smoker, and I cannot stand the smell of cigarette smoke. It also makes me cough and 'choke'. I think the majority of non-smokers out there also feel the same way. So I wouldn't let anyone smoke in my house.

  24. Reformed smokers are a nightmare. I was at a house party and I was told of for smoking in the garden as the smoke was going in through the window. The next time that she had one nobody went. Most reformed smokers finish up having treatment for bad nerves and mental problems.

  25. If you are in the UK, you are not permitted, by law, to smoke in your place of work, which includes customer's houses.

If you are not in the UK, ask permission.

  26. I think you did well and you were practically smoking outside anyway.  Those people on their high horses might do well to realise it's quite a drop from up there.

  27. Hi well as I am a non smoker if I found someone smoking in my house it would really p**s me off as it just disrespectful as smoking in someones house making there stuff stink, is horrble, so what if its raining you are the one who wishes to smoke and comtaminate yourself and others so you should go outside especailly if the house is a smoke free zone, it smelles even worse if there arnt smokers in the house.

If I was a smoker I wouldnt smoke in anyones house I would just either go outside and smoke and if it was raining I would wait, workers get too many smoke breaks as it is nowadays, im sure you can live without having a smoke for one day jesus.

  28. I do not want my house to smell like smoke at all, ever! There are smoking bans in most states now, with many of them banning smoking in bars and restaurants. 99% of the non-smokers are happy about that law going in to effect. The only reason not to be happy about that is that some people feel as if government is trying to control them more and more each year.

So do not smoke in anybodys house except your own.

  29. Yes it would upset me.  I gave up smoking 12years ago and am the worst reformed smoker that you could meet! I hate the smell on peoples clothes.  I can smell a smoker from 10 paces and even tell if a smoker  has borrowed a book before me from the library.  It is horrible and the  thing that upsets me is that I smoked for 30 years before I came to my senses

    Sorry to preach

  30. No smoking in the clients house - ever, period.  If they client is available to ask, and they are a smoker that okays it - go for it - otherwise, no smoking inside.  I don't smoke, my husband does - but not in the house.  I would be bent if he smoked inside and that would go for anyone else for that matter.

  31. To be honest, I agree with the homeowner. It's their house and they asked you not to smoke inside. I too would have asked you not to smoke in my place and would have been furious if you did.

To a smoker, one cigarette is not such a big deal, but as a non-smoker I think that they are disgusting cancer causing sticks. I can't even bring myself to touch an unlit one, let alone put it in my mouth. The passive smoke forces my throat to close if it's thick enough.
