Question:

Would you like Tile in your kitchen?

I was ready to order hardwood for it today but too worried about scratches - being the most commonly used entry is in this room and I have kids who will bring it lots of gritty stones on foot or shoes from playing in the creek. I don't want vinyl because I am senstive to plastics fumes and the adhesives they use. I had tile once before for a short time and was happy with it except I regretted the white grout. Any ideas, I have to order today but I keep changing my mind.

  1. tile would be the best solution but get a different color of the grout. i have a beige color tile and i put a brown looking grout. looks lice and dont have to worry about looking ugly.

  2. Take it from me,I had hardwood installed thoughout most of my house. The oringal plan was to have mexican tile in the kitchen.Well we decided to put the flooring in the kitchen also so it would all match. It might look good, but it was a big no no.Every time my kids are making a glass of water the ice ,or waters spills on floor, hard to get stains out from grease that has poped on the floor ect......Don't do it If i could do all over again I would of done tile.I feel the tile would of held out a lot more stronger and durable.Good - luck on the choice

  3. We remodeled our home and have hardwood floors every where but...the kitchen & baths - we have 3 children :)

You might consider doing the same, but instead of ceramic tile use a natural stone that way you'll be using the same earthy theme.

    Have fun!!!!

  4. Okay well I love tile but hardwood flooring is good too.

  5. Go for linoleum - it's durable and you don't have to trouble yourself with grout. It has been a lifesaver in my hectic life!

Hope it works for ya!  =]

  6. Personally I would like Tile in my kitchen - Yes - On walls - http://www.brandsconstruction.com/Copper... and countertops http://www.brandsconstruction.com/Copper... not on the floor.

Even porous tiles can be slippery, and ice cubes and water spills can make tile hazardous. Adding the wrong types of rugs onto the floor can make the floor even more dangerous. The right types - can make tiled floors fine.

  7. I have tile in my kitchen however, I really don't like floor tile because it is so slick when wet. I have had a few people fall at my house from hitting wet spots on the tile. It is so slick. If you go with tile I would pick something that has a little bit of roughness to help with traction.

  8. Use a larger tile and have them install it with the smallest grout lines possible and make sure the grout is cleaned and sealed periodically.  Also, some hardwood is infused with polymers that make it stronger than ordinary hardwood, so you might want to look into that.

  9. Go with the tile, for all the reasons you have cited.  Don't worry about the grout - you can get tinted or colored grout to match the tile fairly closely, so you won't have that dreaded white line nonsense to deal with.   Impossible to keep it clean, I know!

You are so right to back away from the hardwood.  As gorgeous as it is, it's not meant for areas where water is a concern (basements, bathrooms, kitchens) and while durable, it likely won't hold up to the beating that the kids can dish out.   LOL

  10. Tile (smooth not textured) is the best and yes white grout sucks, we went with a darker color grout and I love it..

  11. i don't like Tile in the kitchen..

  12. I'd love limestone or tumbled marble on the walls above counter and then on the floor terracotta or limestone, perhaps. Something that looks like that (not shiney).  Hardwood in a kitchen is not my favorite. My friend got vinyl so that was good.
