You may wish to look into playing chess at the turn-based site Little Golem.

It's a turn-based site.  You make a move a day, or several moves a day, or a move a week, etc.  There are tournaments you can join, a large list of players to play against etc.  The server will keep track of the position, and will, optionally, e-mail you when it's your turn to move.

They have a bunch of other board games there also.  It's free to join.
