I've been offered a good opportunity, but I've heard the place is somewhat dangerous. I have a wife and two little children, and I've never been there.

  1. It's the home town of the Sinaloa drug cartel so not always a nice place.

I wouldn't move myself, let alone family, to a place I've never been.   Go visit on your own

  2. I've been to Culiacan many times, in fact, my grandparents still live in downtown Culiacan.  Yes, like any city there is some crime.  Violence has been on the rise in the past few months. But, it's not like you are going to be involved with the cartels so there is no need to worry.  As long as you are aware of your surroundings and use some common sense you should be just fine.  Perhaps, you should take a quick weekend trip to Culiacan and see if the city is a fit for you and your family.

  3. No, I would not move to Mexico if I had two little children. There is other opportunities in the USA. It really is not safe for foreign people.
