  1. It's a case of whether or not you are able to pass the points test for general skilled migration.

If you are able to qualify and meet the points test for a 'normal' permanent visa, there is no point whatsoever in obtaining a subclass 476 visa. In that case, there is no benefit at all and there are in fact disadvantages because a 476 is not a permanent visa and holders are not eligible for a number of benefits available to PRs.

Subclass 476 visas are valuable when, because of lack of work experience, an applicant is unable to pass the points test and is therefore not eligible for a permanent skilled visa. Most new graduates from universities overseas are only able to score 115 or fewer points because of a lack of work experience and that is not enough points for an independent permanent visa.

If that applicant instead qualifies for a 476 visa, they are able to gain Australian work experience (and therefore additional points) and it is therefore an excellent route to a permanent visa.

All you need to know is on the website, but here are the details:

The Skilled – Recognised Graduate (Temporary) visa (subclass 476) visa allows recent graduates of selected overseas universities to gain up to 18 months of skilled work experience in occupations in demand in Australia.

As a holder of this visa, you may apply for permanent residence at any time if you are able to meet the passmark on the General Skilled Migration points test.

In order to be eligible to be granted a subclass 476 visa, you must meet the following requirements:

In the two (2) years immediately before the date of making your application, you must have completed an eligible degree qualification in Engineering.

An eligible degree qualification can be any of the following:

    A bachelor's degree

    A masters degree

    A doctoral degree

    A postgraduate diploma

Your degree qualification must contain a major sequence of study or specialisation in an Engineering discipline. Engineering specialisations include but are not limited to:

    Civil Engineering

    Structural Engineering

    Chemical Engineering

    Environmental Engineering

    Electrical and Electronics Engineering

    Mechanical, Production and Plant Engineering

    Mining and Material Engineering

Important: The qualification that you are relying on to meet this requirement must have been completed at a recognised overseas institution.

If you are granted this visa you are able to live and work in any part of Australia and engage in any type of employment.
