Question:

Would you prefer a fairway wood or a 2-hybrid?

The only time I would ever probably think of touching my 3-wood is on a par 5 when I am "dreaming" of reaching the green in 2 for an eagle putt. Even then I still would rather just use a 3-hybrid coz atleast I know I can get up on the green in 3. With the 3 wood, Yes (maybe) I can reach the green in 2 but there is also a good chance of mishitting it and ending up OOB or somewhere other than the fairway. When I get a good drive off the tee and a solid second shot with my 3-hybrid Im only about 20y from the green.

So do you think I will be better off dropping the fairway wood and getting a 2 hybrid instead for that extra distance while not sacrificing accuracy?

What do you think? Is it worth it?

  1. Great question. The answer for me was to use a 5 wood instead of a 2 hybrid or a 3 wood. The distance falls right between the two options and unlike the 3 wood, I can hit it off the tee or turf so it's more useful for me.

The long answer here is that I'm not consistent enough to go after par 5's in 2. I'll take that 20 yard chip you mentioned every time.

  2. A 2 hybrid and a 3 wood have different lofts.  A 2 hybrid is similar in loft to a 5 wood.  So there really not the same club.  However, what works for you works for you.  For me I get more distance with my 3 wood than my 2 hybrid.  My 3 wood is 13* while my 2 hybrid is 18*.

  3. there are very very few hi birds that come with a nuetral face . they are closed , natural tendency will be a slight draw . plus the shorter shaft will be easier to hit from any lie . definatly the hibird . easy to chip with . specially from hard lies in summer . real stroke savers  good luck

  4. I'm in a similar quandry.  I have a 15 degree V-Steel 3 wood and 16 degree Cobra Baffler hybrid.  I don't see the need to carry both but I hit the Baffler off the ground better than I do the 3wood.  Right now I'm carrying both since I'm not carrying my driver (slice issues).  I tee off with the 3 wood and then hit my second on par fives with the hybrid.  But when I put the driver back in the bag I'll need to decide whether to take out the 3 wood or take out a wedge (I carry four).  It certainly wouldn't hurt to get the hybrid.  I know a lot of golfers who don't carry woods anymore, just hybrids.  That's probably what I'll do when I work out the issues with my driver.

  5. Todays #3 woods are very hard to play from the fairway, unless you are a PGA Tour pro.

The loft, for one, are the same lofts as drivers were 10-15 years ago.  You see todays #3 woods are around 13-15 degrees of loft.  This along with a huge face height and large clubhead size make it difficult to hit from the fairway.

This is for a majority of the #3 woods on the market today.  There are other options though, if you need more distance than a #3 hybrid can provide.

    1) Low profile, 16 degree #3 wood

    2) 17 degree #4 wood or 17-18 degree #5 wood
