The new electric cars to be produced by Phoenix Motorcars have a range of 100+ and a battery life of over 250,000 miles and can recharge in 10 minutes with special charging setup. Would this be preferred over a cheaper hybrid that still needs gas and only gets up to 80mpg?

  1. Hybrid is an excuse to keep selling oil. Electric is the way to go.

  2. The electric, absolutely.

Hybrids areessentially a marketing gimmick.  They use nearly asmuch gasoline (about 70% on average)--and you can engineer a straight gas engine to do as well as most hyprids.

Electric cars--at least for urban transportation, which is what most people use cars for--is the way to go.  We still ned to develop alternatives to coal for powr production (so we aren't burning coal to produce the electricity) but the technology to do that already exists.  And electric cars offer the opportunity to get off oil entirely.

Also--although the electrics are going to be expensive at first, jsut like any new technology, that will change.  The technology is simpler, and as volume builds, they are potentially cheaper than gaas-poweredcars.

  3. Personally I would rather own a more environmentally friendly electric car.

However, the Phoenix SUT costs $45,000 and is only available to fleets right now.  On the other hand, a Prius costs less than half that much and you can go to any Toyota dealership and buy one right now.

On top of that, if you're taking a trip of longer than 100 miles (or 50 miles if you can't recharge at your destination), you can't use the Phoenix.  A Prius can go 500+ miles without needing to be refueled.  Then a Prius can be refueled at any of the millions of gas stations around the country in just a couple of minutes, whereas the SUT needs a special and expensive charging station to recharge in 10 minutes (though it can recharge at any power outlet in 6 hours).

Don't get me wrong - I think electric vehicles are great.  But the only benefits of an EV like the Phoenix SUT are environmental, lower maintenance, and reducing gas consumption.  At the moment hybrids are more practical.  This will change as EV development continues to advance though.

  4. A plug hybrid will get 40 to 50 miles before it burns gas and it is not as likely to leave you stranded. So why would you pay more for less. 80 mpg + 40 miles on total electric is 120 miles on one gallon of gas and you don't have to stop to charge. So you could go 280 miles on 3 gallons of gas and 440 miles on 5 gal. of gas with a plug hybrid.

  5. electric for sure
